Discussion about
How & when do you think it will affect real estate in Brooklyn Heights? http://brooklynpaper.com/stories/33/10/33_10_ac_witnesses_update.html

Wow.

For ten years I prayed and prayed and prayed that this day would come.

Maybe now Brooklyn Heights residents can take back their Sundays and not have those unwanted visitors ... and not have to worry about being accosted on the sidewalks anymore.

Deprived of their building, they'll become poltergeists and haunt BH 24/7 for the rest of eternity ... even saying "hello" to you as you walk by. Scary.

The bigger effect will be the traffic around the Brooklyn Bridge. That Pearl St approach can back up an hour just from one of their big 18 wheelers trying to park in the building.

Thank you Jehovah!

Oh, and the pearl st approach backs up the Cadman Plaza exit, backs up the BQE.

The traffic gods are with us! Praise be to Jehovah.

BSLOTKIN, Jevhovah's are the only group that I know of that peddle their beliefs door to door. Unless you have been invited to my home (friends, family, delivery people) don't ring my bell. And when I tell you that I'm not interested in what you have to say or your literature don't ring my bell again the following weekend, and the weekend after, and the weekend after... Yeah, it's a mystery why some people don't like Jehovah's witnesses.

I thought there was a specific reason for the headquarters there. Something to do with the religion and access to the sky. Did the access point move upstate?

This is really, really horrible.
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Niemöller's published 1946 speeches mention Communists, the incurably ill, Jews or Jehovah's Witnesses (depending on which speech), and people in occupied countries; the 1955 text, a paraphrase by a German professor in an interview, lists: Communists, Socialists, "the schools, the press, the Jews, and so on," and ends with "the Church." However, as cited by Richard John Neuhaus in the November 2001 issue of First Things, when "asked in 1971 about the correct version of the quote, Niemöller said he was not quite sure when he had said the famous words but, if people insist upon citing them, he preferred a version that listed "the Communists", "the trade unionists", "the Jews", and "me".

blotskin, I really think these comments are all in good humor. I too do not believe in being "intolerant", and yet as someone who was raised a JW I will share my opinion. Intolerance is a huge part of the JW religion. They are not "allowed" to associate with worldly people (people not in the faith) and therefore will preach to you, but have nothing to do with you (unless you accept). They control based on fear (armaggedon, excommunication etc.) and do not respect other people's choice of religion, beliefs etc. Their intolerance (they know the truth-everyone else is wrong) breeds other's intolerance toward them.

Blotskin is right on the money. My father became a JW when I was in H.S. and it was like he became brainwashed overnight. My brother was in a horrible accident about a year later and he would have had him DIE rather than have him get the blood transfusions that saved his life.

I don't know how I'm expected to tolerate the fact that my father was willing to kill his child in the name of following these strangers.

I did react, to the intolerance people expressed. It isn't appropriate. It doesn't need an explanation. It is pretty naked. Let Jehovah's Witnesses be.

As for JW, they have their beliefs as do other religions. Catholics are especially aggressive and send missionaries throughout the world to "save" people of other religions or without religion and excommunicate those who disagree. Religious Jewish men won't interact with women. Amish don't fraternize. Evangelicals claim homosexuality caused the floods in New Orleans. and so on

I do let JWs be; they have the right to their beliefs just like everyone else (despite how mind boggling those beliefs are). I would never deign to go to their homes and tell them not to believe what they do. But they don't let me or their Brooklyn Heights neighbors be. Stop ringing doorbells, stop trying to convert people.

This is moronic.

> Let Jehovah's Witnesses be.

Asking to "let be" ANY group that rings your doorbell to prosthelytize hate is utterly ridiculous.

> I did react, to the intolerance people expressed. It isn't appropriate. It doesn't need an
> explanation. It is pretty naked.

Intolerance of the intolerant is a GOOD thing. Jeez.
America should have been a bit more intolerant of the Nazis.
Naked intolerance would have been AWESOME, we would have had many fewer deaths.

Tolerating evil *is* evil.
You have it completely backward.

> As for JW, they have their beliefs as do other religions.

So did Charles Manson.

Yes, there are examples of other religions being stupid, but HOW DOES THAT JUSTIFY OTHER STUPIDITY?

Two (or ten) wrongs don't make a right.

Intolerance deserves NO tolerance.

> Religious Jewish men won't interact with women. Amish don't fraternize.

And neither rings my f*ing bell and tells me I'm going to hell.

You can't tell the difference?

BTW, your stereotypes are so wide they're not only vague generalities, they're WRONG.

No wonder you have it backward.

While attempting to communicate with a jehovah's witnesses, I thought I was taking crazy pills!

"JWs were told not to engage in any plans for this world, including marriage and having children. Many quit their jobs, sold their homes, and dedicated themselves to going door to door. (Source: 3/97, The Berean Call.) All in all, the Watchtower has predicted the end of the world for 1914, 1918, 1925, 1975, and 1989."

Wasn't there also a 2000 something end-of-the-world prediction as well? Though, I do like the instructions about not procreating due to the "end-of-the-world". They'll eventually dwindle in numbers... yeah right!

bslotkin,

you gotta understand that when i lived in Carroll Gardens (in my 20s), they rang my bell. I came out in underwear, smelling of yesterday's booze and they tried to preach the word of the lord to my hangover. i had to quickly explain/slur to them that an athiest jew will never convert and told them to try the brownstone next door. i'm guessing that my underwear was somewhat open, because they never returned ;)

Nutty or eclectic does not mean hateful. Somewhereelse you should get overyourself, try looking at the mirror. I'm Catholic but I sat next to a Jehovah's Witness on a plane and she couldn't have been nicer, and I was the one striking up the conversation. No hate, no preaching, no trying to convert, no forcing literature on me, nothing less than fully pleasant.
