Discussion about
I propose another one for early- to mid-May, before the sultry season kicks in. Pay-as-you-go, no group check, revisiting our city's Dutch roots, etc.

Okeh, how does Wednesday, May 12 work for yez?

We recently went for drinks on a Wednesday evening at XR Bar (Houston & Sullivan), http://tinyurl.com/y5kc8na ... and it's a good bet for our purposes -- especially on the loudness front. Definitely not a dive, but not sceney or this or that either. Fairly convenient to a bunch of subway lines. No food served, but a friendly bring-in policy.

Other opinions welcome and solicited on this suggestion.

Let's say oh, say, 7ish.

NYCDreamer, I've booked REO Speedwagon. Okeh, not really really, but it's the most RE-appropriate band I could find. Well, national RE anyway ... but just wait. It's cheaper to rent XR Bar than to buy Steve's apartment, so I hope you will re-calendar to the new venue.

Alan. I feel a little let down . You promised Steve's place. (1200 sft 2 balconies). And now were headed to some side car bar. I'll be there coming in from Boston.

I'm in. I was debating offering my place, but I couldn't figure out how to work it w/o having everyone's email address. I'm up for May 12 Wed, 7ish. But, if anyone would like to have some eats & drinks at my place later, shoot me an email at nyc 10023a at yahoo dot com.

So all, Wednesday May 12, 7ish, at XR Bar, 128 West Houston St (NE corner of Sullivan &) ... followed by the afterparty in the 10023.

Another scary meeting of the minds, AR: after reading SNs's post, I was going to suggest emojitos. But I'll stick to the WWI-era sidecars instead.

And that wasn't harsh on NYCDreamer's part -- I get those same popups all over the place, in real life as well as cyberlife. They point at me and laugh, not with me.

Emojitos: A sort of lithe, goth, insouciant brazilian cocktail. How does that work? It's a great name if you can capture its essence.

Adding, I just saw some research that successories posters may, in fact, have an actual positive effect on performance. I may have lost all hope for humanity with that finding.

Alan, is it too early to start planning a Fall get-together?
Maybe late October?

Sidecars travel the road to ruin.

Usually the only missing ingredient at a reasonably well-stocked bar is the recipe ... or maybe potable lemon juice. What do average bars use for lemon juice? Chemically sour mix?

You can put all your children to work squeezing lemons ... that way when they're old enough to make sidecars for you (2nd Grade), they'll have more appreciation for the sum based on the parts.

Having no issue of my own, I use frozen Minute Maid lemon juice, available in a box near the frozen juices and -ades in your local Piggly Wiggly.

I should add that I'm really cheap and use good-enough brandy (Jacques Cardin, from Acker Merril & Condit on 72nd) instead of cognac ... causing a loss of the smokier flavor that you might prefer. And, of course, Gran Gala, cheaper and higher-rated than its better-marketed peers.

But I don't think you can bring your own alcohol to a bar ... the G-Men would send their SWAT team.

10023, i read quickly and thought you wrote, "What kind of lemming juice should I bring?" LOL!
that would be the official SE cocktail - sidecars with a splace of lemming juice..

I DO think they orange liqueur and brandy ... I thought you wanted to bring those. But then I thought you wanted us to all head to your place uptown at 11pm on a school night.

Alan...have you ever used E&J brandy? Its very reasonably priced and around South Central its known as as "liquid Jesus" (as in drink it, see him). That might not might be a great enticement for a nice Jewish boy but it could make an interesting side car. (Which I can't wait to try next week btw...don't think I've ever had one).

I'll take my Jesus in liquid, gassy or solid state, I'm not picky about that, but faced with navigating the E&J / Christian Brothers (more likely the "liquid Jesus" of legend, but Californians aren't always very clever that way) scene, I switch back to vodka rocks with lime. I'm wimpy that way. I should just go to a Wimpy Bar instead.

i like to think of Jesus as a mischievious badger.

especially after a couple of sidecars. with E&J, just imagine the transformation.

TOTALLY different, AH. This was equal parts of each, completely different animal worthy of a different name.

Quite frankly, I'm a simpleton. My favorite spirit - triple sec - citrus combination is the lowly margarita made with high-quality tequila.

nyc10023, I have extras ... I'll bring it. Did you look for a box right next to the frozen juices? I think it's down the aisle from the laundry detergent, near the corner.

inonada, that IS totally different!

It's been said that the margarita is based on the sidecar -- the latter dates from about WWI. After a schism (year unknown), it branched out into the French Sidecar (equal parts) and the English Sidecar (more heavily tilted to cognac, much less lemon juice; maybe they couldn't find it at the uptown Fairway).
