Discussion about 211 East 18th Street in Gramercy Park
It's a non-fireproof building, according to BIS. So that's another piece of data supporting my theory that non-fireproof buildings have lousy noise insulation.
If noise is a big factor for you, your first stop should be the BIS website to get the CofO for the building and see whether it's fireproof. If it's non-fireproof, move on.
I know someone who lives at 211 East 18th and it is much less noisy than a lot of buildings. Maybe not super solid prewars but better than many postwar buildings either those built at the same time or more recent construction. In every other respect, 211 is a fantastic building for the pricing, it is meticulously maintained, spotlessly clean and very friendly and supportive of .
residents.
I lived in the building for two years -- stay away, far, far away. Every step on floors is heard above AND BELOW you. When lying in bed at night you can hear the people in the next apartment just talking in their normal voices. There was a red flag right from the beginning. At my board interview the woman was waiting for her downstairs neighbor to join -- she banged her foot on the floor and screamed at the top of her lungs: "ARE YOU COMING UP?????" No. Never. Do not buy here if you value quiet.
