Discussion about
I'm looking at a place in the area, does anyone know if it's a good area?
I live in the area on Riverside drive and it's terrific! I've lived in a bunch of places in the city and this area is by the far the best for kids and family.
Love the hood. We live at 100th and Riverside and would gladly live further north someday. Great restaurants and near the parks for the kids. We always feel safe and have a little boy who loves it.
I don't live there but that area is not considered the hood...not by a long shot! Great area...really hip and happenin' spot...and Columbia is right there!
GREAT neighborhood. All the stores and restaurants that service the area have definitely gone up a big notch. Plus there's good standby's like Absolute Bagels, the Hungarian pastry shop and Rack n' Soul BBQ. Lots of really nice food markets, St John's Cathedral, Columbia campus ... I would totally move there if there was a chance of finding anything affordable.
I have lived in the morningside heights area on and off for the past 20 years (mostly on) The neighborhood is fantastic for families or just folks who like living in the city but dont necessarily like to hang out in "happening" bars and clubs. If you can afford a place on Riverside drive in this area you should jump on it.
fyi, my reference to "hood" was not made in a derogory sense, just shorthand (as the rest of my email shows I believe).
#7 stop worrying about being politically correct.
It's not an email, it's a discussion board.
#4 took the reference as meaning the neighborhood was not nice. Since that was not what I meant, I corrected that. It was not being "PC", it was correcting it so the OP could understand that I love the neighborhood. So, stop worrying about other people's posts, #7. And thanks for pointing out that this is a discussion board #9, that's helpful.
I like the neighborhood, but I'd be wary of the public schools. I wouldn't say it's the best for kids and families in the city for that reason. Just my opinion.
The private schools in the area are terrific though!
Great area. I lived at 111th between B'way and Riverside. Very comfortable neighborhood. Travelling on the train downtown can be a challenge at times, but the area itself is great.
I lived on Broadway @ 108 for 1 1/2 years ('03-'04?)... yeah, it's not bad. Esp. if you are on Riverside. Basically, the further east you go, the crappier it gets (one of the few parts of manhattan where being near Central Park ain't so great). But, the Riverside Park area is nice. There's a bit of ghetto-type stores on Broadway, and quite a bit of beggars/homeless on Broadway, and some drugs & riffraff on Amsterdam, but I never had any problems up there. Incidentally, I can't remember which street exactly (I think it was 106 btwn Broadway & A'dam)... more rats at night than I've ever seen. Anywhere. On any night. It was funny, because it wasn't in front of my place, though.
