I'm sad. It is fun to be making jokes at the expense of the Euro, the inept EU, etc. But has anyone forgotten the genesis of the EU? I know you Yanks came to the war late, and it was fought offshore for the most part. When I was born, the Cold War was still going strong, the memories of WWII fresh in people's minds, and the thought of the Berlin Wall falling, the inclusion of much of Europe in economic union with a single currency (minus the pound) was unthinkable.

nyc, I grew up with nextdoor neighbors who built a "fallout shelter" in case a nuclear war - the greatest thing about it was that although it was constructed of cinder blocks and nestled under ground level, sealed over with dirt, it had a tube for air

I also remember when, if people suggested the US and the USSR would become "friends," most people would take that as a cynical remark

I think it has been an amazing accomplishment. And I think people make light of what a huge deal it was to end the bloodshed in the former Yugoslavian republics. It was the assassination of G. Duke Ferdinand in Sarajevo that started WWI, after all.
