All the liberals will cry and blame Bush and the right wingers. The dems will want more shared sacrifice and complain the rich are not paying their fair share. The leader of the regime will call for bigger government to solve the crisis. And we will continue to go bankrupt.

What exactly do you mean by moving towards bankruptcy? Bankruptcy is quite absolute. Either you are in it or were in it, or you aren't and weren't.

States can't go bankrupt. There's no provision for it in the bankruptcy code.

"States can't go bankrupt. There's no provision for it in the bankruptcy code." You must be a lawyer. Bankrupt is bankrupt. The states will have no money and they will not be able to pay their bills. BROKE

Lemme guess - you also believe in the end of days. Trust me, it won't be anything so dramatic.

bankrupt?
What will happen?
Examine history. There will be a reorganization of the debt and life goes on. Big Mac Bonds...remember?
It's not great for the town or the price of RE but...that's the way the cookie crumbles. Focus on what's really important and what you have power over. This is an expensive city to run and it's constantly making endless meaningless compromises.
Charter schools for instance. Wait till you see the nightmare this creates.
If the goal is better education for our children why do we allow the ELA to dominate the school year. For my child it started in January. Every moment was spent in test prep as if the state had no syllabus. When the test was over so was the school year, as far as teaching is concerned. Let's also be fair to the teachers. If the kids don't perform they hold their feet to the fire. It is the stupidest shit on the planet and masquerades as education. City workers who get top heavy overtime the two years b4 retirement so their pensions are through the roof. We need some serious union busting and people of the city and state are going to have to face the music.
Viva Andrew Cuomo
Viva Richard Duffy
Let's hope this steam roller ends up in Albany and not under some hooker.

Look into the future. NY and Pennsylvania states will be the richest states in the US in the very near future. Shale gas will make both states richer than you can ever imagine. I doubt they will be bankrupt unless our politicians will again mismanage this huge revenue stream by wasting it on ineffective and inefficient public servants with larger than ever benefits.

Falco: I'm guessing your kid is in 3rd grade :) Yeah, the ELA is a contentious thing. It's great to have some minimum standard for failing schools, but it's silly to impose it on children of middle-class or involved parents. Can't think of a more politic way to put it. As I've said before, NYC public school system is made up of working-class students, most of whom have parents are unable/unwilling to help and who don't come from a culture that values education. So spare me stories of striving immigrants. It is ill-equipped to deal (by and large) with aspirational middle-class parents who don't want to move to the burbs.

4th grade
I downloaded the 4th grade State Mandated syllabus and followed along this year. We also took the time at home and with the aid of private Tudors to make sure to cover all the ground toughly. The actions of our much touted UES public school barely grazed the surface and I consider my child's teacher a dedicated educator. The system is just screwed...too many cooks spoil the broth. We are moving our child to a private school. There is simply no way around it.
My child's teacher is always saying,"Your child is so smart". We answer,"compared to who"?
By the way, last year she scored a 4 on both portions of the test.
Trust me, we didn't give birth to Einstein Jr. This year she said the test was even easier.
