Discussion about
Just moved into a brand new rental building this past weekend and I am trying to figure out exactly what can be done within the apartment that won't count as being some sort of damage. For example, there are no hooks on the bathroom door (or on the back of any door), and there isn't any place to hang anything on the walls either. Nothing was spelled out in our lease except for there being a rider that we weren't allowed to paint the unit (which is stupid if you ask me, considering all they used was that cheapo flat paint the contractor sprays on). Is there any real rule of thumb when it comes to this stuff? It has been a non-issue in every place I have lived in prior.

You are usually allowed to put hooks and hang pictures. When you leave the apartment this would be considered normal wear and tear but you could just spackle so the landlord does not have an excuse to chip away at your security deposit. If you are really concerned or plan on doing more that just hanging a few things on the walls I would just call them and ask but get it it writing to protect yourself.

For door hooks, go to Smith & Hawken and get these copper hooks they sell that hang over the top of the door. I think they are designed for hanging christmas wreaths, etc, but they work great in bathrooms.
