Discussion about
Is it possible that the powers that be at SE are swinging the ax with too heavy a hand? There are some posters that are so prolific that if their accout was disabled...they would be missed...at least by me. Come on SE Daddy...go easy on the kids

Not sure what the standard is, there's a fair amount of harsh language and stalking, etc. Sometimes its completely tolerated and other times the posters get greyed out.

I've gone back and forth on it. I used to think just ignoring them would make it all go away, but some people (and understandably so in many cases) can't help themselves responding. So something like a 3-strikes policy seems reasonable to me if that's what they're doing. Some other posters contribute very little to the SE community other than insults and irrelevant rants (ie: petrfitz, somewhereelse) and should be given warnings - might help declutter the board a bit.

I think that only this one deranged poster should be disabled. Some inexcusable language and positions by other posters should not be subject to extreme sanctions. And though I am a staunch advocate for privacy issues, I believe that if this one troll -- who is well known to SE-- is in fact in the broker business, he should be outed. There are clearly issues of mental stability with this troll. If he is a broker as he has claimed, it is dangerous for him to be taking hapless victims into empty apartments and apartment buildings. What is the legal responsibility of SE and what is the moral responsibility of those of us who can't deny that this particular troll is in serious need of help from the medical community?

My young niece is out looking for apts. I have made her take a friend with her to every viewing because I'm terrified she will come across this troll. And now I wonder if I have put her friend in harm's way also. This guy is off the charts whacko.

Riversider, I have no problem with people I disagree with at times - some are among my favorite posters (aboutready, JuiceMan, even w67th), but there are others (esp the two I named) who just spout vitriol seemingly for sport. You can't tell me you find that stuff particular useful or even beneficial to the SE community?

StreetEasy's entire forum system is horrible, the worse offense (clearly being brought to light) is that people who should be entirely banned (email & IP) are not, and continue to post the same rubbish to the forums every day. If your peers want you gone, then that is how it should be. But all the 'report abuse' seems to do is zilch. If you ask me it's about time they do something, ANYTHING.

Follow that up with zero ability to privately message someone or even have some sort of identity to go along with your name and you have a community of people looking to discuss real estate being brought down by a poor system and a few bad eggs.

There are 'off the shelf' MySQL forums (sorry if I'm getting too techy) that do leaps and bounds more than StreetEasy... and considering that I pay $10 a month to be an insider, it is not only a shame, it's pathetic. StreetEasy is one of the best real estate sites in my opinion, but it seems like it may have peaked too soon and can't keep up with the public's demands.

Riverside, I didn't say ban outright, but point is, when there's cause, I don't think it's a bad idea to just issue a polite warning.

@bjw2103: True, but the access to older apartment information is incredibly useful, especially when I am away from my desk where I would be able to look at my own database. I'll keep paying, but I think I'm going to email StreetEasy (who typically respond and act on my questions) and express my anger with their systems that haven't changed at all for the benefit of their users.

and bjw is guilty of pretty much everything he's accused me of.... including doing so on posts where I actually took time out to post a good deal of data which several folks thanked me for... yet he was spewing venom soon after.

Many of the folks who call for posters to be removed need to first check themselves.

Or, in this case, just need to stop being dishonest about it.

Trolls, just don't unhide their comments.

People you don't agree with? Just disagree with them.

It's the ranters and ravers that are out of control. The cursing at posters who don't agree. Take them down to Chinatown. They fold real fast when they realize they picked a fight, out of their league.

@MRussell: In my experience, the report abuse link works well. I'm judicious about how I use it but I've been happy with responsiveness and I think SE's responses (deleting a comment vs. graying out the poster's account vs. disabling the user's account permanently) have been appropriate and proportional to the offense.

I do agree that SE let things got out of hand a couple of times - the whole hfscomm episode that went on for weeks and ruined a lot of threads and more recently the counties situation that got especially out of control over a weekend and didn't get addressed until Monday - but once they act they have done it decisively.

I'm not so upset about functionality but agree that a private message capability would be a big addition

Falcogold, i completely disagree. If anything Streeteasy does not exert enough control over the forums. Once you've been banned, your IP should be blocked, so we don't have a repeat county every day. Also, I would just wipe out all comments under a banned handle, not just grey them out. As to the obnoxious, maybe it should be a matter of degree. If 3 people think you suck, well, you're just an interesting person. If 20 people think you suck, maybe your comments go grey for a month, and you can't start a new thread.
You don't have to have saintly participants to eliminate trolls, just have to make it less attractive.
As to the $10, this has nothing to do with the matter at hand. You're not paying for the forums, but for the hard numbers.

I find the gray text and midget font immensely effective.
Since first implemented after the original comm sequels, the only time I found any distraction was in the reponder postings to the gray ether, because I value what all my black text full size font colleagues are writing and bother to read only those postings. (except for CC, I'll read those too)

Otherwise just ignore the gray.

They try to lure others into the cyberspace ring for a fight, and then you can just let them kick themself in their own butt. They do a flame-out face-plant on the canvas. Knock themselves out -- for all to see.

She doesn't have the presence of mind to have shame. It was her unfortunate friends that were forced to be embarrassed by her.

Her husband works for a law firm. He has clients. They would be aghast at her comments posted here.
Stop allowing her to pull that on you.

I have her Sunday melt-down flame-out , printed out. The rest can be had, in discovery.
I have nothing to hide. She has everything to hide, and lose.

My boyfriend could buy and sell her husband -- 20 times over. Stick a fork in her,she is done. She went too far, with the wrong person.

Interesting.

I might sit the rest of this out and just see what transpires among others. This has the potential to be more than the several year fights between somewhereelse and bjw or LICC or stevejhx.

But I am still interested in why kylewest seems to have no shame.
Why columbiacounty's post about someone being hit by a bus is still here.
What in w67thstreet's upbringing could lead him to determine that a mother who killed her 4 kids isn't responsible (and could actually have a kind heart) but that the real estate industry is responsible.
Why apt23 thinks she is a saint when her strategy in a conflict is to call the police and falsely report a felony gun crime by her husband.

Do you really think that Truth is for real? I don't.

Truth is for real? What does REAL mean? Someone who posted yesterday at the sound check for the Willie Nelson concert at Radio City?

Are you for real when you want someone to be hit by a bus?

ar, you're outnumbered, give up, find something else to do while you hubby and kid don't pay attention to you.
but seriously, go back and read the threads. see how many times you and cc say the word "fuck". tony montana would be ashamed.
67 talks about azz, penises, and little else.
none of you know ANYTHING about real estate. you've never had any involvement on the business side of it. i provide, in my way, FAR MORE than you ever could dream of. even if it is a contrary view point.

AR, I've met your husband and there are certain arenas that I feel he might intimidate me.
For one....naked Greco-Roman wrestling.
Two...whack-a-mole
Three...focused reading for duration and comprehension.

outnumbered, really? you've done a poll?

how many positive interactions have you had here, honesy? can you count them on one hand or two? people saying thanks, honesy.

do your wife and kid pay attention to you during your rants? and since you ostensibly don't have a lot of time with the kid during the day as you "work" why do you spend your evening hours here?

falco, the focus is slipping rapidly. you may get him there in a couple of months, even. the naked Greco-roman wrestling. I'm still giving him the odds.
