Discussion about
Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this question, but is there anything like a Yelp for real estate agents? It seems very hard to figure out which agents actually DO things (e.g. staging, suggesting improvements), as opposed to just holding an open house or two. Thanks, Dave

Have you looked at rateyourbroker.com? I can't vouch for the usefulness or accuracy.

There isn't anything on the web that really works because real estate agents don't touch enough people -- unlike a contractor on Emily's List who might see 100 clients a year, seller and buyer agents especially don't work with that kind of volume.

Also, a lot of sites where you'll find agent recommendations, like Top Agent Guide (which, full disclosure, I know the founders of) and Blockshopper -- they're on some level pay-to-play, so you might learn about an agent's strengths and weaknesses, but you're also looking at text put up to generate a referral fee, not purely unbiased editorial text.

Although I understand that people say that about Yelp too.

Add to that the NYC market is highly specialized, so it's hard to find a credible best-of list. I think beyond the basics (clean, on time, good communicator), what makes the difference between a good, professional agent and a great one is the knowledge of their market (type of property, neighborhood, type of buyer.) So a great UWS coop broker might be just good for a Turtle Bay condo.

You could dice it even finer than that if you wanted, maly. For example, I think I'm a very good agent and I think my boss Gil Neary is a very good agent, and we both know downtown, but each of us would do better in some situations than others.

The easiest example that I can think of is that Gil used to be a kitchen designer, so if a wall needs to be moved to improve the layout, he can both switch it around in his head and communicate that better than I can.

There are agents listed and reviewed on Yelp. That's how we found ours.
