The fact that the Nazis and fascists outlawed and murdered socialists and communists, labour union leaders, and in each case entered government as part of a coalition with the traditional conservative party of Italy and Germany seems lost on her. It was the Church, the reactionary old nobility, the great captains of industry, and the conservative party leaders who allied themselves with Hitler and formed a coalition government. They thought they could control him, but were wrong of course. But all the left wing parties in Germany (and in Spain and Italy) bitterly and in the case of Spain, VIOLENTLY opposed the fascists.

Thousands died in the Spanish civil war which was unambiguously the socialists versus the fascists. Who wanted to restore national glory, the central place of the church, traditional values, and stamp out communism and socialism. Who wanted to end the influence of foriegn elements.

Who voted for the fascists and Nazis? Small shop keepers, farmers, the petty bourgeoise. Almost the same sort of crowd that supports the Tea Party here. It was NOT labour unions, the socialists, or communists. Not the German liberal elites, students, intellectuals, or suprise - minorities like the Jews.

Nothing about that is left wing. The left wing in the German, Italian, and Spanish parliaments were all jailed or killed. Meanwhile, Franco, Hitler, and Mussolini surrounded themselves with Bishops, CEOs, Barons and Counts.

Wanting "big government" is also what Napolean, Louis the 14th, Alexander Hamilton, the Czars, Jonathan Hobbes in "Leviathan", and all the fascist and neo-fascist dictators of Latin America and Africa wanted. The latter were supported by the US for decades as bulwarks AGAINST communism. People in Sweden or Germany under any of their post WW2 socialist governements were Nato allies against the Soviet Union for the US. People there had and have just as much freedom of speech, religion, etc as people in the US, and far more of course than those EITHER in say Franco-era Spain, junta-controlled Greece on the right OR the Soviet Union or Poland on the left.

And lest you doubt the capitalism of these places, please note the Danon yogurt, Nokia cell phones, Ikea furniture, BMW cars, and Fox News you are able to consume from CORPORATIONS from France, Finland, Denmark, Germany, and Australia - all of whom have had socialist governments during recent years (or now.)

Ergo you can have left wing OR right wing dictators, or just plain wacky ones. And you can have left or right wing democratic governments.

Communism is bad, fascism is bad, and the Mosque at the location proposed is an insensitive idea.

Hey Julia and Deplucha, we were arguing many pages ago. I said that the so called Ground Zero Mosque is no problem considering they have been using it as a prayer space for over a year before all the ethnocentrists and race-baiters found something to latch on to. You guys say it is insensitive.

I am just wondering, and maybe you can answer this for me, but I doubt it: How many Muslims/Arabs should be allowed to congregate within area of Ground Zero? I am sure you are for a limit. Because Muslims gathering in that area is surely insensitive. So what is the cap? 3? 5? Anything under 19? Can individual Muslims pray in the area? Is that okay? Or is only when there are 3 or more Muslims when it becomes insensitive?

Follow up: I believe there actually was a Mosque/prayer room within the WTC. WITHIN THE VERY SITE!The insensitivity is mind -boggling. I am sure you would agree.
