Look on streeteasy, craigslist,walk around the neighborhood and ask the super if any apartments are becoming vacant.

The Ellington (260 West 52nd) sometimes has a 2/2 for around $4850. You can ask the doorman for a key to view vacant apartments. Otherwise, www.craigslist.org is the way to go.
Ellington is not a walk-up. Walk ups will be hard to find without broker. Most big doorman bldgs in the area have rental offices. Ellington is most reasonable, Ritz Plaza slightly expensive and the very new buildings are expensive! Going west (past 9th Ave)does decrease the rent but I lived in a walk up there and would never do so again
