I have never been more appalled in my life with the lack of professionalism at this building. The doormen are beyond rude, B&L Property Management is completely oblivious and could care less about the residents within their buildings. DO NOT RENT at 21 Chelsea or with ANY B&L MANAGED PROPERTY if you want to be treated with respect and appreciation.

"The doormen are beyond rude"

Hmm.

Apparently those Christmas bonuses just aren't enough.

Maybe they expect a full month's rent as a "tip."

Or maybe you should just put out a little.

Any reason why you posted this, nycgirl10? I'm looking at this building next week, and I'd like to have more insight as to why you feel this way...

Are any of you looking for an Interior Designer? I design your space to your taste for a very reasonable price, perhaps less than any other Interior Designer but to the same quality.

I just started my own business and I am looking for new projects to show the quality of work i can provide!

If interested please call: 646-673-5585

my fiancée and I love the bldg, the doormen are actually very nice if you speak to them and say hi, they care about the residents, and do a great job with helping in any way if needed. not to mention the great location, the bldg is quiet, clean and the aprt are large. great value for your $$$$

This building has one huge drawback but is otherwise great. The management, doormen (not all), and super are rude, abrupt and obnoxious. But the space and location are perfect.

I have lived in the building for 2 years and am sad to be leaving. While not cheap, I think the building represents great value for money in Chelsea, and I have never had any problem with management (or interacted with them at all, in fact). I think the doormen are friendly but appropriately distant...perhaps some interpret that as rude? Deva is particularly nice. The space in the 1 bedrooms is good, I have a walk-in closet, the appliances are all new and kept working by Haki the super...all in all, I highly recommend the building.

I am currently looking at an apartment here. However, I noticed a few comments online regarding bed bugs. Does anyone know if there are bedbugs in this building? Thanks.

I currently live here, and while it may feel a bit pricey, it's cheaper than other alternatives in the area. The doormen are hit or miss. Some are super friendly, such as “Deva” (btw, that’s his last name). Others, such as Tim, can seem very cold/stern. It may be more cultural. Just be friendly, get to know their name, and they’ll be very nice. There is a problem with some of the evening doormen, as they let anyone up without checking. I had a past resident or one of her friends apparently banging on my door at 3am and then passed in the doorway. I’ve had other incidences where people are knocking on my door that I’m not expecting. I'm writing an email today to fix this. We'll see what this does...

As for bed bugs, I saw similar warnings on some online reviews/resources. I have seen no sign of this. It’s a pretty new building, so that may be something that happens when furniture is moved in an infected van.

If you think you may stay a while, I recommend signing a two year lease. When you renew, they raise the rent quite a bit. From what I’m seeing, it’s more than units are going for on the market. But as a warning, if you break a lease, they charge you 1-2 months’ rent (basically the security), depending on the length.

There are issues with heating & A/C. They frequently don’t turn on heat until it’s below 40 degrees, no matter what time of the day, which is in violation of the law. This happens a lot. And the A/C units don’t work that great. During the last heat wave, both my units were on full blast, full time, and the temperature inside was still 80 degrees.

Also, you’re right across the street from Trader Joe’s. This is a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that you are so close. A curse in that it’s very loud when the trucks are loading products, frequently from 6-8am. I think that’s a major reason why it’s cheaper. A lot of residents are not happy with this.

Take all this for what you will. I like the place, but there’s a reason it has a lower rent than others in the area.

And finally, for Ms. Jaquez - take your spam someplace else.

Also, as someone has commented in another thread (http://streeteasy.com/nyc/talk/discussion/21739-21-chelsea), it is VERY loud on the weekend, especially from 2-4am. Let’s just say there are some “urban” clientele, from certain “urban” clubs between 5th and 6th on 21st, that have absolutely no social considerations or manners, and think its fine to yell while walking down the street or start fighting on the sidewalks. I’ve always lived in socially active neighborhoods, but this is ridiculous. One night, some “youth” decided to start breaking windows in the building. Of course, no police to keep this in line.

And another heads up – the corner units are right next to an early 1800s Jewish cemetery. Some people are freaked by this; some folks think it’s cool.

Thanks for the thorough response, BizKid. I really appreciate it. I had seen the comment about the loudness on the weekends; I'm hoping I'll just be able to sleep through it. I'm glad to hear that you've seen no sign of bed bugs, that was really my biggest fear. Didn't really think about the traderjoe's trucks but definitely makes sense. In spite of these things, I'm glad to hear you still like living there.

How is the air conditioning in this building so far this summer? As for heat, worst case I can get a space heater, but a/c is another matter.
Thanks
Art

Is there still an issue with bed bugs in the building? I am looking to move there and do not want to if there is a bed bug issue.
