Discussion about
As many of you know, I'm a frequent poster on these Streeteasy chat boards, offering what I hope is useful insider advice and wisdom. At our last meetup, the Streeteasy crew asked me to tell them if I *ever* got clients this way. Since I just closed my FIFTH Streeteasy deal this year -- a 2-BR co-op sale -- let me take a minute to say, "yes, Streeteasy works." It has connected me to a bunch of lovely people, from a newly-minted lawyer to a Columbia professor to Wall Street pros. I am so grateful to everyone who keeps this community going. Thank you all for inviting me in to be a part of it. ali r. DG Neary Realty

Congrats Ali! I will also concur that StreetEasy has been a great place for business and meeting some pretty special (and extremely knowledgeable!!)clients.

sjtmd -- ?? -- I'm not sure what you mean by "split your commission."

The last deal I did Citi-Habitats brought in the buyer, and I split the commission 50/50 with them.

MAV, why not? or you can say hi off-board at ali [at] dgneary [dot] com. Maybe I can refer you some business if I know what you specialize in. Certainly I've told one or two people who have contacted me to call Keith ..

sjtmd: Do you mean split the commission with Streeteasy (in other words, give SE a referral fee for providing customers), or split it with the buyer?

.. @w67, let's keep running with your metaphor ... and then being mocked by someone who constantly boasts about his staycations?

Ali G...why didn't you just let SE know directly of your experience rather than posting for the world to see? Another example of you using this site for free advertising and to boost your ego (expecially since you must live with the fact that you worked for the New York Post)

And when you post stupidity such as this, you asked for whatever you get back here.

apt_boy: Ali G has provided great info on this site. By posting her gratitude publicly, it allows potential RE advertisers to know that this is a dynamic board and is worth their advertising dollars. And, it might attract more brokers who, if they respectfully contribute to this board as Ali does --as opposed to promoting their wares-- it will be even more informative. If there are more advertisers, we can push SE to improve their listings and help with statistical analysis or any number of improvements. I found a great broker on this site -- W81st-- who has helped me enormously in person and through his posts.

So Ali was right in expressing her gratitude in this way, imho.

se and other re sites will, to the benefit of non-re-professionals, replace brokers--as life insurance salesmans and stockbrokers, etc have largely been replaced--there will evolve "showers" of properties for sale who will be paid on a fee basis to open doors, hand brochures, and prevent theft--transaction costs will go down and people will be better informed, with better price discovery and transparancy

much as i appreciate highly w81's posts, i might prefer to read his analysis on a site where he get revenue from advertisers

not sure i like that se is starting to populate with brokers--they work for commissions, they are all about promoting their wares, ultimately.....whatever their claims of altruism are

see re brokers >< freakonomics

oh, julia, I'm very fond of you. I'd sell you our firm's studio in Chelsea if I could, but I know you have your eye on a 1-BR. (and I'm very fond of w67, too).

Apt_Boy, whatever. I have to live with the fact that I went to Harvard too.

apt23, thank you -- I would love to see this site grow and grow.

and wbottom, I hear you, but people have been predicting that greater transparency = greater liquidity = lower transaction costs in real estate for years, and it has yet to happen. A lot of the problem is that there's just a great deal of labor involved, and as buyers get more computer access, instead of using it to cut out labor and save themselves money they throw increasingly wider nets. When I bought my first place in 1996, I looked at TWO apartments. Now an easy buyer is someone who looks at TEN apartments, because they feel obligated to chase everything they see on the computer, whether it's a good fit or not.

w bottom--not sure i like that se is starting to populate with brokers

i think that 30 yrs, ali, w81 and others have provided some invaluable info on this site -- some that was 30 yrs in the making. Other brokers who just harp about their developments or apts with broker babble (Act quickly, prices are going up!) are generally hounded off this site.

agree that community has done a good job of filtering away the garbage--if that's part of it ongoing, no worry

But apparently streeteasy, just like the antibiotics and creams, can't get rid of w67thstreet's STDs.
