Discussion about
Has anyone had any success or problems installing a high velocity air conditioning system (Spacepak or Unico) in their apartment? Pitfalls to be avoided? Is it possible to hook it up to heat as well? We have a place outside to stick the condenser. Would love the possibility to ditch the window units. Apartment has about 1100 square feet interior. Thanks all for help.

Fine for A/C - except for the whiny, squeaky sound through vents occasionally.
As for heating - it's possible BUT expect huge bills - in the order for $500 for 1100 sq. ft.

Google "heat pump" and Northeast, and you should get the idea that it's not ideal for our climate.

The Unico system is well designed and and engineered (in the U.S.) and is best suited for installations where no other
renovation work is being done.It is more expensive to install, but is ideal for N.Y. apartments and townhouses. I have installed
several of them in the last 10 years and clients are very happy with the results.By the way, it is not a heat-pump type system,
even when used with the optional heating coil section.

How big are the monthly bills for a Unico/heating coil system?

'scuse my ignorance but what is the difference with heating coil? and pump? i currently have PTAC units in the apartment if that makes any difference? would i have to keep these systems in the apartment since the unico systems don't work well for heat due to expense etc?

also, can someone explain why i've had 5 different people come out to the apartment for estimates and all have told me different things - i have heard i need 3, 4, 5, 7 ton units?! no joke. i'm getting the feel there is a lot of guessing that goes on. Someone suggested hiring an engineer to do the work to layout what is best and THEN get the AC guy. Thoughts?

i'm not entirely ruling out conventional but wasn't happy to hear about all the duct work that goes all over the place.

I really appreciate these responses.

free,
your intuition is correct;the hvac contractors are guessing about unit sizes and you should
have an engineer calculate the cooling load and then have the contractors bid from those plans/specs.
Unico systems are designed as air conditioning systems, but they offer optional electric and hot water
sections. These are primarily intended as back-up heat sources, unless you were to install an additional
boiler to allow Unico to be your primary heat source, which could be done, although in N.Y.C. its hard to
imagine why.

Ah, another thing - your electrical load may increase significantly. What this means - do you have the capacity to handle? If you are in an apt building, it may be impossible to increase current to your apt.

Wondering if anyone else has experience installing Unico. We saw this system at the triplex at 162 E 91st St that just sold and would love to find an installer that could tell us more about it.
