Discussion about
Good Day SE, Has anyone experienced removing concrete from their backyard and replacing it with turf or SOD? How long would this project take? How much capital would this project cost? Can I do this project myself? Can you offer alternative advice to complete this project? NYC is truly the concrete jungle.

Mutombo: I think I saw this project on "This Old House", or "Ask This Old House". Check out their website.

This past weekend they had a topic on the proper way to plant trees. They were also showing how to save dying trees by removing the "mulch volcanoes" that cause tree-roots to suffocate.
In case you are thinking of planting a tree in your yard.

Truth,

How are you? I will check out the website. At the moment, not thinking of planting trees although, not a bad idea. I am concerned with removing concrete and replacing with SOD or laying SOD over soil/grass that I do not want to revive. I want my backyard to look like The Great Lawn, green and plush.

Hi mutombo: Feeling fine, thanks.

At least one tree would make your yard look nicer.

Those guys on "This Old House" have done it all.

Just don't plant them in the mulch volcanoes.
The root sprawl needs to be left uncovered.

Let those trees breath!

Remember you would have to cut the grass.

Remember you will need sun for photosynthesis, unless they have found a way around that.

..and no need to capitalize SOD like it's some mysterious acronym for grass.

spinny: Great weather for enjoying your terrace -- no noise from a/c this time of year.
