http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com/2010/10/home-prices-double-dip-in-sudden.html “Clear Capital’s latest data shows even more pronounced price declines than our most recent HDI market report released two weeks ago,” said Dr. Alex Villacorta, senior statistician, Clear Capital. “At the national level, home prices are clearly experiencing a dramatic drop from the tax credit-induced highs, effectively wiping out all of the gains obtained during the flurry of activity just preceding the tax credit expiration.” This special Clear Capital Home Data Index (HDI) alert shows that national home prices have declined 5.9% in just two months and are now at the same level as in mid April 2010, two weeks prior to the expiration of the recent federal homebuyer tax credit. This significant drop in prices, in advance of the typical winter housing market slowdowns, paints an ominous picture that will likely show up in other home data indices in the coming months. Gary Shilling says single-family home prices will drop another 20% over the next few years with number of homeowners underwater to rise from 23% to 40%. [less]

so much for the american dream!!! imho this is gonna be the decade of the renters even more than the last one.
Homes are becoming more affordable. That sounds like good news for many folk who had been priced out of the market.
I had posted this interview with Gary Schilling on another thread that got highjacked by troll. I remember that when Schilling was one of the first predictors of the housing bubble and inevitable collapse -2003 or 04 -- the media treated him with total disdain and he turned out to be very correct. So when he says another 20% it seems plausible since that would be exactly the reversion to the mean.

So your husband never faced charges for the illegal gun buy and you never faced charges for the false police report, am I right?

it's great news for everybody. asset bubbles are never a good thing (much less when involves a non-discretionary item like shelter). remember that the bubble also inflated rents.
Does the index include Wayne, NJ? If so, than steve can correlate to Manhattan.
