They are buying infrastructure and network access. I don't follow Google but it seems to point to a dramatic shift towards that of a service provider, as well as content provider. Don't hold your breath for a free love Google R&D campus in Chelsea though.

The building is loaded with network infrastructure and fiber optic points of presence that is worth far more than the real estate alone.

You guys are redonk. DoubleClick and Google were both already in that building years before they merged. There a few othe Internet companies there. GOOG is just buying the building it's already in.

considering Google purchased its Mountain View CA for $319MM, it's $2B purchase in NY shows a long term commitment.. im thinking the geeks in San Jo are looking for a better restaurant scene.
