Discussion about
http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article/20101107/SMALLBIZ/311079980 ... I hope they allow overnight RV parking at their new location. Then EVERYBODY gets a chance to live in Long Island City!!! (Not just the thousands of low-income families who will move into the new buildings NYCHA is building there.)

If a TGI Fridays opens up in LIC, the neighborhood will be completely irresistible.

walmart attracts a seriously sophisticated and wealthy demographic--think of the art, music, boutiques and fine restaurants that will set up in LIC to capture their piece of the action

this is the turning point--buy now or be left dreaming of life in LIC

There are already two K-marts in Manhattan, not to mention Target, Costco, a few TJ Maxx's, DSWs, TGI Fridays, Red Lobsters, countless McDonald's...now all of a sudden you are snobbish about low-end chain stores?

Well, after being rebuffed by the East New York community, who are so snobbish that they do not want a Wal-Mart in THEIR neighborhood, it's nice that they have a chance to make it in LIC.

Cantchajust hear the music? "New York, New York, If we can't make it anywhere else, at least we'll make it in Long Island City!"

Sounds catchy! Not like radioactive cancer catchy, buy catchy nonetheless.

Jason, don't bunch up your rainbow thong. Look is there a Tiffany to offset the walmart? Howz about a central park? Okay just give me an ice rink in lic?, no. How's about a Saks? Okay okay a bodega that doesn't sell bongs? Hookers wo clap? How about strip clubs where a bottle cost more than $10? Oh fk, just give it up lic. I hear taxis fares are getting bubblicious... Maybe you can share the nabe with more taxis.

it's terrible to think that duane reade, the soul of the neighborhood, will likely be displaced by the heartless walmart

the cruel story of the category killer!!

though it is sorta heartwarming that, after the discrimination wal-mart endured in east new york, it will now have a warm home in LIC

And think of all the badly needed jobs Wal-Mart will bring to LIC! It will give the local economy another shot in the arm.

Next thing you know, they'll put in a BJ's! That will take care of LIC condo owners' grocery needs!

I wonder if this will work in LIC since no one wants to live there.

MidtownEast, that's such a nice idea, but first they'd have to check with the East New York community and give them a right of first rejection.

Especially if they know it's being offered to Long Island City too. East New York just isn't scrappy enough to get into a scrape with bottom-scrapers.

Duane Reade is owned by a not so small company called Walgreens with an equity value of $38 billion. They should do fine, given Walmart's long-time trouble finding an opportunity in NYC.

The LIC haters are really showing their lack of intelligence in this post.

Not that it matters, but where in the article did it say Walmart was coming to LIC? It said Walmart was looking at sites in Manhattan and East New York.

Now the bitter LIC haters are making up stories about LIC to try to criticize it.

How many times can you say "LIC" in one post? If anyone is obsessed, it is you.

Anyone else find it funny that someone that lives in "Midtown East" is bashing other neighborhoods?

Wbottom lives in a hovel just off the Queensboro Bridge - and has since appointed self a curmudgeonly arbiter of all - when wearing nothing except a unitard made from re-purposed sod, he is oft referred to as Capt W. Man, I love these LIC threads.

Not if the neighborhood is LIC.

I'm not a hugh fan of Midtown East, although 2nd ave has its draws for that particular set...

but, its Manhattan. Which gives one bragging rights over pretty much the rest of the world. ;-)

Duane Reade lost a lot of it's charm when the Cohen brothers sold in the early 90s and lost the rest of it's charm when it went public in the late 90s. At this same time buying up the chain Rockbottom stores and it appeared the Rockbottom model had more influence than Duane Reade to the store sets( a real shame).
I'd expect Walgreens to model all these stores after Walgreens, being an imported goods look and though an improvement, still a Rockbottom model.

Walmart being a larger version of these stores will anhiliate nearby Walgreen stores, but won't affect convenience shoppers.

W, sorry, that is the one detail I got wrong. The hovel is easily relocated, so no fixed address.

duane reade. i always say i'd take half the drugstores if each could have more people helping.

now our cvs has only one manned register, the rest is all self-service, and half the time it doesn't work or you need for some reason to be at the one real register, so you now often get to wait in line twice.

for awhile walmart had this awful instant rating system for your experience. in front of your checkout person (i don't know if they could see the results) you could rate them. it was horrid.

That sounds dirty.
