Easy. A million more, but only if they're cute.

nyc10023, how about "avg looking with $" vs. "above avg looking without $"?

I think nyc10023 is on the right track, but defines the criterion too narrowly. Two million more people, but only if they're all good-looking, and remove the ugliest-looking one million people as part of the deal.

Go for the big wide shallow view.

You know, Sunday, I don't think too much about random strangers' bank accounts. It's enough for me that they're cute.

A million more, less one per AR. Any more cuties in the city and my circuits might short out, so a normal mix will do for me.

Listen, I could do with a little less money and a LOT more beauty. The UWS is famously and deservedly frumpy.

Just slightly less.

Is that the right answer?

nyc10023, with everything else being equal, I hope my kids would choose average looking with $ vs. above average looking without $. If they don't know how much their bf/gf have in their bank accounts, I don't consider that a serious relationship. They would not have my blessing to move in together without that knowledge for example. Relationships break up mostly because of $ and/or infidelity; $ and avg looking might result in better chances.

The reason I posted the original question was because I was curious to see how many people would comment on the relative financial standing of the million people coming in or out. I see many threads about the quality of life in the city and/or the quality of the apts for sale, but I don't see many link that quality to their financial standing vs. everyone else. Financially, I'm probably somewhere near the middle. My income is going to be relatively flat going forward with variations coming from investment income. Whether I will remain in NYC in the long term is probably going to depend on everyone else; who's coming in, who's leaving and where I stand relatively to them.

but if you already have your significant other, then how much the extra million people have doesn't matter. besides, there's nothing wrong with building a life together. if i had been considering the state of my future husband's bank account when i met him and even when we married i would have run screaming in the other direction.

i'd go for eye candy also.

actually, sunday, demographics are a fascinating (and frustrating) subject. population and immigration trends, both within the US and from the outside, will have a great deal to say about what our city might look like in 10 years. i don't have a crystal ball, but recently (since the mid-90s, iirc) population has mostly been lifted by immigration, and the birth rate is fairly low. the aging of our population could cause huge movement out of major cities and into areas that can more easily accommodate assisted living facilities (of which there are horrifying too few as of yet, so those units have yet to be constructed and will compete against the existing housing stock).

i'd be surprised if 10023 is actually being serious with her comments here.

sunday - so you always want to be making, at least, a little bit more than the next guy. that's a tall order in this city. we can all dream.

i'll be honest, i chose my husband based on potential for future stability (financial, emotional, etc). he's rock solid! (and cute to me :)

Yeesh, sunday, I wasn't talking about finding a mate. I have some non-standard views on that, skewed towards giving my eggs their best shot at eternity.

uwsmom, no, I'm ok with just making a little bit more than average. The real average, not the IRS reported average.

maybe. if it has enough empty space (and some of the condo buildings do) you might be able to create an industrial kitchen, a dining room (the lounge and gym for physical therapy are already there, i presume, hopefully with a sauna, pool and jacuzzi for those tired old bones and muscles), etc. could be added.

can you just envision it? buyers who took on the risk and bought in a troubled building on bricknell receiving the memo from management informing them that the remainder of the units would be now used for the elderly, and the common areas would be retrofitted to meet their needs?

nyc10023, I own my current place as well. I like nyc and would like to stay here. It would be great if my children would want and can afford to stay here as well. I don't want my kids to feel like they have to make 200K+ just to live here because that will limit their career choices.
