Discussion about
Nov. 15 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. House ethics committee denied Representative Charles Rangel’s request that his ethics trial be delayed because he doesn’t have a lawyer, and the case against him proceeded without the New York lawmaker present. Rangel asked for more time to get a lawyer as the trial began today. He said his previous counsel dropped him last month after being paid $2 million in legal fees. Rangel said he didn’t have the money to continue paying the lawyer and needed to set up a legal defense fund to raise cash. “All I’m asking for is the time to get counsel,” Rangel said. “You tell me all the things I can do, but you’re not going to give me time.”

I'd support a motion for a public defendant.

I remember Damato near the end. Sure, he was a scumbag but, he was OUR scumbag. We might not have missed him when he was gone but, we sure missed all that federal cheesecake.

I think we should go easy on Charlie. Say what you will, he's ours and, that kind of power is not easily replaced.

Remember kids...it's all about the money.
Unless your the other Chuck...then it's about the Money Shot!

Nice guy, effective for his constituents and for his party. But people should know their own "term limits" - unfortunately when you are in a bubble you rarely know it.

I don't "get it" either if you can't be more specific.

He had a sense of "entitlement" and didn't understand the public's reaction to his apartments, his failure to properly pay some of his taxes and so forth.

With regard to the apartments--- He had an opportunity to say my finances have improved, I don't need my 3 or 4 rent stabilized/controlled apartments and will now give them up to someone who needs them more. It wasn't an issue when he first took up residence but it sure is now.

Eh. He was our #1 rep on the Ways and Means. How big are the issues before that committee? Rent stabilized apartments are small potatoes for him. Rather have him than Kirsten Gillibrand who ran for the Senate with her number 1 issue in her adverts that she voted against pay raises for congress (where she hadn't been for 2 years) and her number 1 accomplishment that she put her finances or schedule on the Internet.

No not one rent stabilized apartments. Four rent stabilized apartments. He is also charged with improperly soliciting donations for a public center and library and not properly declaring income and failing to pay taxes....there's more.

He ruined what would have been a good record, by thinking he was above the system.

> He had a sense of "entitlement" and didn't understand the public's reaction to his apartments

but he was re-elected by a huge margin, hence the public didn't care that much

His constituents didn't care, or they were not aware of the issues. I'll give hem the benefit that it was the latter.

public representatives make how much? as a transition to business?

top political power in the us always comes with little money, relatively, and far more so now. thus the problem. positions of power only appealing to those who wish for power will lead to problems.

He faces 13 counts of violating House rules, including charges of using his office to raise money for an educational centre bearing his name, and of avoiding paying taxes on a house he owns in the Dominican Republic.
