Probably about the same as last year. I tip more than I need to/should, but I love my rental building and 5 years later, the guys do the same great job they did the day the place opened.
$80-$100 each for the porters, $150-$175 each for the doormen/handyman/super. I was fortunate to have a good year financially, so if anything, the state of the economy makes me want to ensure that these guys are well tipped.

Jason, real New Yorkers are those born in New York County, not NYC. Those born in NYC outside of New York County are mere BBQs.

i have to agree with bubbles. jason, kw, if another tipping thread understandably is annoying, don't click on it.
and there is some novelty in seeing if people's patterns are changing over time. maybe more and more people are moving over to the matt camp (although i truly hope not).
many people here are new. they may have no clue as to the voluminous history of tipping threads. or they may just want to take part in a new discussion of the issue, having "missed" the opportunity last year, and the year before.... just because we've discussed the issue to death doesn't mean that everyone has said what they have to say on the issue.

kylewest is easily overwhelmed, so no surprise he can't handle another thread on tipping. Some while back he was complaining how difficult it is to cross 14th street. Welcome to New York young man.

It's all over the map, but I am often surprised at the total absolute number that it turns out some people are tipping. When tips total 1500$ plus it seems to me it has gone way beyond being nice, and is starting to seem like some kind of supplemental compensation. Personally, I think tipping as supplemental compensation makes no sense since the people are otherwise compensated. Of course, if a well-off person is simply looking to hand out charity to people they know and find helpful, but not everyone is wealthy enough to afford to do that and so should not be expected to do that.

In large apt bulidings: http://streeteasy.com/nyc/talk/discussion/16795-holiday-tipping-in-large-apartment-building and http://streeteasy.com/nyc/talk/discussion/15873-holiday-tipping-large-building
