I just read this article http://therealdeal.com/newyork/articles/century-21-ny-metro-said-to-be-on-brink-of-closure-and-firm-seeks-new-capital-with-ceo-marc-lewis anyone have more info?
century 21is also a brokerage. I do not think they are talking here about the retail stores.
The day that CENTURY 21 DEPT. STORES CLOSE is the day everything in Manhattan closes down!!!!!!
They are planning a new store opening sometime next spring at the present Barnes & Noble location at 66 St. and Broadway, across from Lincoln Center.
UESaptowner, to answer your real question, a number of the real estate brokerage houses are not doing well. the realogogy mess comes to mind, but i don't know how much of that is local and how much national.
C21 is part of the Realogy family.

i knew they were not talking about the Retail Stores (which by the way this time a year is a zoo!!!)
wouldn't Realogy throw some money to salvage what's left of the company.
Ali - Century 21 NY Metro is not owned by Realogy. Realogy is the franchisor of the brand across the country but the offices are owned independently.

Mark Lewis expended C21 as a Manhattan real estate brokerage very quickly. He probably
took on excessive fixed operating costs for the market we're in, and might have many
empty desks because low-earning agents are quitting.
We have several agents from C21 in our office. AC Lawrence took over their space on East 45th Street. Some agents stayed, but most left for other brokers.
