Ok, there are a dozen guys that work at the garage I park my car at. What do folks typically do for holiday tips?
Tipping?
That doesn't seem normal for someone with anger issues.
40 each
$500 in tips for your garage? Sounds like a whole lot to me. Are you taking the car out 5 times a day?
The more folks work there, the less each should be tipped. I say $300 total if you use it daily, down to $150 if you only use it occasionally.
if more folks split the same work, they shouldn't be paid more in total.
I tip equal to one month's rent. I do not tip during the year and I get the car out about twice a week. Total: about $400.
If you take the car out daily, then it may be appropriate to give more to the people who regularly assist you and a bit less to those you never see. Call it a tip, a bribe, or a ransom, but this is one place where your tips can really get you some bang for your buck. By overtipping perhaps $10-$20 a guy, I get 12 months of goodwill and smiles and noticeably speedy service. Is it right or wrong or fair or not? I don't care. The money makes little difference to me over the course of 12 months and it goes a long way toward making the running of my life less annoying and more pleasant. NB: don't just put your name on the cards with the money--put your car number too since that is how most of the guys know you. And if you can, hand each guy his card personally so they associate your face with the generous tip. That's my 2 cents.
I'm sure those guys know who you are.
A few years ago at my garage they actually had Xmas cards on the cars with the names of the 3 attendants. The past few years they stopped doing this, so I don't even know their names as I use my car infrequently. EVERY TIME I take my car out I give a tip, so is it really necessary to give an Xmas tip on top of what I already give?
I'm already over the $ 1000.00 mark in buidling tips where I live........
I don't know what is appropriate or not, but it seems in my case that for the amount of service I use and my tipping each time I use my car, that is probably okay.
I also tip each time, five times a week. Was planning to give a holiday tip too but yesterday there was a gash on my car that no one would own up to.
If you tip all year long, I am not sure anyone expects a $50 xmas tip. Maybe a $10 instead of $2.00 for anyone you usually tip. But I suppose some tip to those you don't see would help them be more gentle with your car as they move it around the garage during the year. That should do it. But figure that one month's rent is about what all the tipping should probably come to. Again, all this is just as eaily thought of as extortion, but it is what it is. I like to think these guys are nice to me and do a good job and that is why I'm spreading the wealth a little.
For those giving larger Xmas bux, do you tip during the year? I tip each time I get the car so it's more fair to the person retrieving the car. Thoughts?
new account: I don't see that as "more fair." To park your car or get it out, other cars often have to be moved which requires more than one attendant to do this. As other cars are moved around during the day, other attendants move your car again. They all presumably treat the car with a degree of care deserving of some recognition.
I'm at a small garage with maybe only a couple of hundred spaces. The person who brings the car is pretty much random so that the tips are evenly distributed. If I start not giving them tips now on a regular basis, they'll surely do some damage to my car!

What color is the sky in your world, Alice?
Thanks, Matt. You nailed it: I'm a complete rube, new to the big city, pretty much a gullible fool who can't manage his affairs, and easily hoodwinked by garage employees. In my diminished capacity, it does seem to me that "Tips = happier service providers." But I am not on a crusade here. Isn't it great people can take in other people's opinions and then make up their own minds and do what they want on this non-momentous issue?
