Discussion about
For the record: Cancel My Paying Acct. Cease billing me on my credit card. Clearly StreetEasy is cool with what the troll produces here. I am not, and wont pay to support this.
Another person who makes a big show.
You realize that streeteasy has an email address that you could email directly without the whole world knowing?
by the way, why do you sometimes post as apt23 and sometimes as Wbottom? Do you think we are "acluistic" and don't notice?
a simple solution a la IMDB is to force people to wait one minute after posting one thing before posting another, and increase the wait time the more posts one makes per hour. Its very hard to spam certain chatboards with such methodology. Adding the annoying "please type these characters" bit helps too.
jason, it would be annoying but maybe ultimately helpful. I have to wonder what clicking on all the thumbs up/down actually does. Anything?
The never ending stupid arguments that take over so many threads are just as annoying as the troll, and I don't know what the solution is for that.
The nonsensical politcal threads on this forum keep away.
SE is working on this problem.
I agree, get rid of the thumbs.
Excuse me for asking, but what is the troll?
aboutready is the troll
I agree with Wbottom. These trolls are really annoying.
I also call for Paying S.E. members to cancel their account until SE seriously decides to address the problem !
sledge,
They really know people are disgusted & they are working on it.
So why is this an Easy Street issue and not a Real Deal, Brick Underground, Curbed issue? What's unique?
You
We are certainly working on the problem.
We monitor and delete his accounts constantly.
A handful of you have given us good suggestions and we thank you.
Most imagine that it's really easy to get rid of the troll, have no real ideas about how in private, but love to rail on about it in public. Clicking the thumbs down is also way to much trouble for all but a few.
New posting rules will make things way less flexible. Soon!
Oh no! Will we be tsa frisked before posting??
It's really a shame that 1 or 2 people cause huge problems.
Thanks SE. I appreciate all your efforts to fix this.
I also appreciate the efforts on SE's part in dealing with the troll, and don't envy any of its employees for having to deal with it, especially after hours (times the troll particularly exploits; times when the board should be at its most-used for the purpose it was intended.
I think the thumbs have been used less than expected for two reasons:
1. it's not clear what the impact would be when it works as intended ... it feels like the impact ends when the thumb lights up
2. it's not clear whether to click the down-thumb or 'report abuse', or both, when there's a problem
I still like the credit-card registration idea, which pretty much locks out the possibility of creating more than one or two handles. At the end of the day, the problem is not the username, but the person behind it.
wbottom: Cancelled. Trust me we care way more about this than you do.
sledgehammer: Priceless. "I call on all people who pay, not to pay. Of course, I don't pay, but if I did, I would definitely stop!"
buyerbuyer: Nonsense will hopefully be our next target. Our patience for mean, stupid and off-topic is almost gone.
w67thstreet: You've been "trolled". People will need to opt-in to see your valuable input.
alanhart: Good points. We will definitely improve the UI so that it's more clear!
Many thanks to tall of you who have sent us ideas, suggestions and clues! Keep them coming.

Not sure what category I fit into, but you'll also notice I have allowed my account to lapse. Bubba called me a lemming, even though I was an anti lemming lemming. A lemming's lemming, if you will, long before it was cool to be a lemming. Anyway, I do have that big mortgage payment now, so hope you understand if I freeload for a while.
SE,
I hear your frustration. Thank you for providing this board, which is a very, very valuable service to NYC and it's FREE!! Ditto for the entire web site. I think you guys do a great job.
SE, I want to thank you for your efforts. I've noticed a very concerted attempt to eliminate troll postings asap. and it can't be easy nor a particularly positive use of time. your solution is a very good one, although it will divert staff from other tasks. but hopefully it will eventually become a limited effort as there will be much less "new stuff" to moderate as the troll realizes that there is no opportunity to spew here.
buyerbuyer: Nonsense will hopefully be our next target. Our patience for mean, stupid and off-topic is almost gone.
Good ..I think that what is most tedious on here are the numerous personal disputes, and idiotic never-ending tit-for-tat arguments, not mention trollish anti-troll obsessors. If you go to specific threads on buildings that kind of thing is basically missing and the site is useful.
bump, since the troll has been moving threads up, albeit with no new invective.
aboutready, I don't think that's quite exactly the troll's work -- I think it's a glitch in the system. Unless the new "moderate" function allows the thread to be timestamped when a new username posts, but the actual posting is supressed by Troll Control 2011 ... in which case it's still a glitch, in the form of s'more code that needs to be written into TC 2011.
Alan is right. There are a few events that update the discussion which should not. We knew it going into the weekend, but decided it was best to get the new code out. We're going to rewrite that next week so that only real live comments update the timestamp.
alan, i thought so. having worked with a system that needed refinement i have nothing but awareness for what needs to be done. it can be done, but it needs a fair amount of fine tuning.
i just intended to say that there was still an issue re the troll posting nothing, and bumping up things to obscure real conversation, and they will overcome that.
Good work SE. I'm sure it's been very frustrating and we appreciate your efforts.
as someone who pays i am so down with SE requiring a credit card to verify an account. even for non paying members.
If people were civil to each other, we wouldn't need troll control. On many boards, people feel the anonymity of posting gives them the right to say things that they would never say in person. As a society, we need to be more civil.
Street Easy -- While it is kind of admirable that you are finally doing something (to a limited extent) about trolls, it is too little and certainly way too late. Other sites stay on top of trolls and they avoid the infestation that you clearly suffer from. You did not act in a responsible way and will have to pay the consequences, I'm afraid.
Of course duecescracked is W67thstreet
Huh? No evidence of that whatsoever.
Deuces is petrfitz with some additional creative license
