I might sublet rental. How do I protect myself?

I am looking at subleting from a renter. They are moving out of town. How do I protect myself, be sure it is legal above board with landlord, and be sure my deposit is not lost? Thank you in advance. Brad

Ask to speak with the landlord and to review the renter's lease.
