I know; I think Jim Carroll is way under-rated as a musician. Even though his writing was great, Catholic Boy is clearly a top ten of all time album.
I heard him read once at St. Marks' Church and he was amazing. He was sort of small and shy before he read, and then sort of grew in the spotlight -- he projected that weird magnetism that very thin people can have while he read.

Basketball Diaries is an all-time favorite book, shame the movie was so horrible, though I did watch Mark (Marky at the time), Leo and Juliet filming a scene on E. 9th Street on the steps of the VFW hall. Hard to believe there was once a VFW hall in the EV. Praying Mantis is also a wonderful recording of his reading. Anyone remember his cameo in Tuff Turf?
Saw him read once at Maxwells w/ Lenny Kaye. Sad to see that while the wit survived, the damage was deep. Hope he had some peace in later life.
Ali!
