Fireplace mantel at 69th & Columbus, south side of street.
Small pine sideboard rescued from 92nd & Columbus two weeks ago. All hand cut dovetails, 17" wide pine boards, and 50 yrs of patina. Now a cherished nightstand.
Believe it or not: Eames chair with ORIGINAL hardware, 91st and West End.
D'oh, stakan! I wish I'd spotted it first... the best I ever find on 91st and WEA is dead potted plants. Though I did once see a chair that looked suspiciously museum-quality Queen Anne... on closer inspection it was just a very good repro.
Of course, the bedbug epidemic has pretty much ruined my taste for hauling back street-side treasures.
Clarification: Eames found before bedbugs era.
A recent find: workers hauling construction debris out of a neighboring building; part of the debris is a full set of antique oversized, glazed copper faucet and shower handles as well as 8 (eight!) cut cobalt glass door handles. The rest is history.
When younger, I used to go garbage diving specifically outside of addresses downtown where I knew well known artists lived. Occasionally, I'd score a nice little work on paper or painting to decorate my walls with....
This Monday night will be the biggest treasure hunt of the year. I've found fabulous stuff all around the city in years past. Sadly, the bedbugs have scared me away from anything I can't leave in sub-zero weather for a few days. My best finds: a very elaborate cast-iron candelabra on 9th street and a lovely charcoal portrait of a young woman, in a broken frame, on Great Jones.
