Discussion about
Open letter to those who attack public service workers Public service workers are not the problem. Attacking public service workers will not create jobs. Attacking public service workers will not solve the problem of trying to save the vital public services that so many rely on. The only thing attacking public service workers does is divert attention from the real culprits of our country's... [more]

Why this silly post, Socialist? Are you afraid?

Unions disturb the free market. We should be able to pay for services with what the services are worth. When unions act like thugs, the public needs to draw the line. We learned that from the Sanitation Department and the MTA. The teachers were getting away with bad behavior with rubber rooms. Private companies with unions like Verizon are not far behind.

Socialist, you're next!

Why do public service workers need unions? Like the rest of us, they can do a good job to keep a job and get a new one if they don't like how they are treated.

powerful corporations and employers are often the thugs, thank you--esp in high unemployment situations such as we have now

the individual worker is relatively powerless in the face of organized employers--so they organize too--levels the playing field

the scapegoating of unions and public employees is a disgrace and a cheap manipulation

all are not perfect, but neither are all of the corporate exceutives and scumbag bankerswho make 20 and 30 times what our public employees earn, and who have profited their way to our current economic demise

and they aint coming for no socialist! you starve our middle class, and they comin for you!!
aint gon be no overpaid union cop or doorman to keep em out...

Can we separate public service workers and public service unions and re-write the above plea? I doubt anyone is against the former. The latter is undemocratic because they can trade swing voting blocks for benefits.

Also, Reagan was a union boss, but that was a private union, and he knew where to draw the line. Federal public unions striking, choosing not to deliver the mail or direct air traffic was unacceptable.

"and get a new one if they don't like how they are treated."

Yes, they can get new jobs... just like the 8 million unemployed Americans can get new jobs after being laid off by their private sector employers.

Then I guess the US Chamber of Commerce is undemocratic too, right?

Glenn Beck pulled off NYC radio for low ratngs. I guess most people don't buy into Beck's anti union rhetoric.

If Glenn Beck is done, and others in NYC have issues with public employee unions and excess public employee retirement benefits, then what is your argument?

In what way are you attempting to compare to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to the public employee unions?

Union exploits the individual workers through fear and intimidation. Individual workers who do not want to belong are unable to withdraw from the close shop. Union try to maximize the benefits to their members regardless of the economic conditions since that is the reason for their existence. At present, all the obligations for the benefits are paid by the tax payers. The snow storm was the latest. There is a reason that Albany has a shortfall of 10 billions and it is all related to salaries and obligations. Of course State money was invested in Wall Street (and lost). How else was the State supposed to cover it's hugh obligations for the extortion by the union? Lets repeat this discussion in the next 12-24 months and we sassess the damage caused by unions.

your logic is so moronic--it was the union's fault that scum like rattner bribe their way to manage our states pension coffers--and the unions created the housing bubble that cratered our economy, causing all asset values to plummet--scary you believe your own shit

your "i'm sick of the working class ripping us off" is very tired---like i said, kill our middle class, turn our economy, even more than has happened in the last two decades, into a 2-class society, and we will have big regrets

we used to have pride in our working, middle class...now we just want to wring it of any wealth can can get from it

and the scapegoating on fox, and here, from you, is a disgrace

No one is against public service workers. We justly criticize public employee unions, the excessive taxpayer-funded pensions, and their manipulation of the political system at taxpayer expense.

socialist likes to argue for taking other people's money at all costs.

Government has been as big a factor in the high unemployment as anything else.
