I think bad. B&N is someplace you could spend the better part of a day in vs. an occasional shopping trip. It's a loss.

Not that there aren't tourists in the area because of Lincoln Center, but Century 221 will bring much more volume of tourists for a different reason. Lincoln Center is a culture venue, C21 draws more of a in and out crowd that looks to hit the store quickly and hop on and off those bus tours.

Probably annoying for owners right there, but overall great for other businesses in general.

sa iyar 1: That's correct.
Good for the building? people/families are living there. They need to shop for clothing/items, at good prices.
Got a kid? They grow out of their sizes. Shopping for new clothing is a constant.
(Take the out-grown clothing to a charity thrift-shop. Donate adult clothing there, as well.
"Cancer Care", on 3rd and 83rd is very good and friendly, and you will get a tax write-off.)
Want to go all the way downtown to shop for clothing? Not if you have a choice.
Good for the neighborhood? Yes. Ever see how many tourists are walking around with Cent. 21 shopping bags? I see them, in mid-town.)

Century 21 has better stock than Daffy's (Daffy's is great for infant's and kid's clothing, but the nearest Daffy's is 57th and 8th ave.)

I'd offer the view that it 'cheapens' the neighborhood. Particularly in that it will have MAJOR frontage. I really hope they don't close up all that great light which comes from the massive amount of windows. It really is a great space. To use it incorrectly would be criminal. But alas, if it makes a buck and pays the rent, then I suppose it will reign.

it s clearly the type of store one finds on 14th street rather than Madison Av.

be nber: That location isn't Madison Ave.
Not to argue with you. Just saying.

Would you be happier if Ralph Lauren took over that space? He didn't although he could have.

don't almost all trains go to the downtown Century21? really, how hard is it to make the trek.

are we so lazy that we can't search out our bargains any longer? isn't that part of the thrill of the bargain chase? if you want easy, go to fifth or madison and spend a ton. sadly, this may reflect the insanely long hours that people are now working, no time to hop on the downtown express on a saturday to see whether or not century's has a black tux in your size.

i'm already mourning the death of the bookstore. although i've been told it's impossible, i've been hoping there will still be some room for the independent bookstore.

I am starting to think that these new megastores (apple, c21, bestbuy etc) that count on visitors and tourists from other neighborhoods are slowly pushing the heart of the upper west side up to the 72-79th blocks

Great for the neighborhood. Lower prices are good for consumers. Additional foot traffic also benefits other merchants.

Oh quick one forgets the outrage of B&N moving there in the first place, now the horror of them moving...fast forward to 2021 when the outrage will be C21 closing and being replaced by "The Facebook Experience Store"

last thing residents want is herald square type of foot traffic; residents of 150 col and 101 w 67 are more like to shop at Burberry's; we also have enough mobile food vendors; of course merchants do better in a mall or a factory outlet but that s not what makes the real fabric of a neighborhood

Look at this area historically. No one should be viewing this area as a wholly residential, quiet area. Never was. We need areas for commerce and tourism.

benb: O.K.
But I know people who live on West 66th street. And others in that area.

They are very happy to have a Cent. 21 close by.
They go to work, to make a living; and would prefer to not take the subway downtown to shop.
How "hard" is it to make the trek"? If you work for a living, and don't have the time to waste posting comments on SE -- it's very "hard".

Apt_Boy: Yes, I remember it well.

huntersburg: Case in point.
