Discussion about
From Kevin Williamson: In terms of harbingers of the apocalypse, it isn’t exactly dogs and cats living together or John Bolton exchanging facial-hair-grooming tips over sugary mint tea with ayatollahs, but, brace yourselves: Texas is facing a projected budget deficit. I know, I know: horrors, right? Paul Krugman is practically rubbing his hands together with glee like some thin-mustached and... [more]

Krugman and this guy are BOTH wrong. See;

The truth is in the middle. Texas WILL have a huge deficit. We will know the exact amount next week.

Texas most certainly has a budget deficit. Even their own state comptroller has said they do. On Monday she is expected to release the actual numbers.

"So, money’s always tight for Lone Star State government, and lots of Texans kind of like it like that."

Except those without health insurance. Texas is #1 the nation in the percentage of uninsured residents.

Texas also has some of the worst education in the country:

Texas is #49 in verbal SAT scores in the nation (493) and #46 in average math SAT scores (502).
Texas is #36 in the nation in high school graduation rates (68%).
Texas was the only state in the nation to cut average per pupil expenditures in fiscal year 2005, resulting in a ranking of #40 nationally; down from #25 in fiscal year 1999.

http://www.window.state.tx.us/comptrol/wwstand/wws0512ed/

Of course, it should be no surprise that low tax states are always behind when it comes to public K-12 education.

And in 2009, Texas ranked #43 for high school graduation rates (61% graduation rate):

http://politifact.com/texas/statements/2010/feb/05/bill-white/texas-has-43rd-best-graduation-rate-united-states/

Which state is #1 with a graduation rate of 82%? That would be high tax, liberal New Jersey:

Low tax Nevada is dead last.

Do families leave NJ after their kids are done with high school?

If LICCdope wants to move to Texas, I say we take up a collection and rent him a U-Haul.

His inconsistency never fails to amaze me: he loves Manhattan and posts incessantly on Manhattan real estate, but lives in Long Island Dumpsville. He thinks Texas and other Red States - which are overwhelmingly more "Socialist" than the Blue States as per % of GDP of government spending & receipt of government largesse - are Da Bomb, yet he lives in New York.

None of it makes sense, yet happily he drones on. Not unlike that famous Austrian Economist Riversider, & his MBS hedges.

What do we believe here in New York?

I didn't understand the point between the dashes.

Texas got $12 billion (billion with a B) in stimulas spending over the past two years from the Federal gov, on TOP of the normal net transfer payments. New york - and California, are two of the FEW states that pay more in taxes then they get from uncle Sam. California would have a surplus - a SURPLUS, if the it got more than the 70% or so of Federal taxes it pays in the way Texas or many other red states do (as in 120% or more.)

Clearly our politicians at the Federal level aren't doing their job compared to Texas politicians.

Perhaps we can all agree to
1 - Get rid of any politician at the Federal level representing New York who has had more than 1 term and has not during that term made a substantial difference in net receipts
2 - Recognize that by solving this transfer payment problem, we can
a) lower our taxes here in New York
b) eliminate our deficits and debt
c) then going forward be fiscally prudent

Two other states with very poor high school graduation rates relative to the rest of the country: California and New York. Maybe we should throw more taxpayer money at teacher benefits and the system, even though NY is one of the highest spending, per student, state in the country.

According to U.S. Census estimates, only seven U.S. states have high school graduation rates above 90%: Minnesota, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, New Hampshire, Utah, and Vermont.

Of course, socialist never lets facts get in the way of his comments.

Current list of New York policicians serving at the Federal Level:

Charles Schumer, Senior U.S. Senator for New York, Democrat
Kirsten Gillibrand, U.S. Senator for New York, Democratic Party

Congresspeople:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_congressional_delegations_from_New_York
In the last Congress, only 2 of New York State's Congressional delegation were Republicans - Peter King and Christopher Lee. Now, there are 6 new Republican Congresspeople from NY who just started 5 days ago.

NY and CA actually have good graduation rates compared to most southern states (see page 52). Low tax states continue to rank at the bottom for graduation rates.

Vermont and Alaska are the most Socialist states in the country. For goodness sake, Vermont... home of BERNIE SANDERS.

The states you listed are also helped by the fact that they are 99% white, since we all know that minorities have lower graduation rates than whites.

For I don't know how many decades, the NY Post is considered by commuters from the suburbs as the perfect companion to the Wall Street Journal.

Texas is going down just like the other states. The Governor is a con artist.
