Discussion about
Assuming 2 identical apartments in the same building, would you rather have the renovated apartment or the unrenovated apartment at a lesser price and renovate it yourself, to your own taste? Example: Renovated apartment = $1,000,000 Unrenovated apt ===== $800,000 assuming it would cost you $200,000 to put it into shape.

Thats an interesting question......If I like the renovation (and I have seen several where the renovation was "spot on" to my liking), the idea of renovation (having been there) was a hellish experience, having to move out of the apartment, contractors workers making mistakes along the way, people not showing up at all (I was there every morning to check on things), etc.....it was my idea of HELL! Not to mention it going over budget, I think it usually does.

If I was going to save $ 100,000.00 I would consider doing it again myself, but your question was very specific about the money being the same and in that case I would pay the $ 1 million (If I had it, lol)

P.S.- 2nd comment , if you have pets (I have a dog and a cat) you have to make sure you have a place to board them or another arrangment depending on how long you are forced to live out of the apartment. A $ 200,000 renovation is fairly substansial so I don't think this will be finished even in a month.

Keep in mind that buyers will almost never pay for what you have spent in renovations though.....I figure if you get 1/2 back in the purchase price you are way ahead of the game......
