extending loft space

I'm about to purchase a duplex apt. with a loft office space about 4 feet wide--would like to extend space to about 10 ft--not sure if I need a contractor or an architect or both - have been researching this for a while online and remarkably haven't found anything pertinent...

Technically if you are demolishing any walls (and building new ones) you need to file the job with the building department. An expiditor can do this for you if it is an easy renovation. If it is more complicated I would recommend an architect.
