Discussion about
Can anyone recommend a company who designs and installs frameless glass shower doors? The enclosure needs to be about 4' wide, so anyone who has experience with this and give me a ballpark estimate of cost would be appreciated.

This is a very high estimate. I paid about 800.00 and got a beautiful frameless shower door with very nice heavy handle. Check around and get other estimates

You can get the Home Depot to drop-ship it to you, then install it in 90 minutes with your little kid sister's help.

Westsider,

Where do you get these custom shower doors?

The range in prices is interesting. The Kohler line alanhart found is $260, while another Kohler at HomeDepot is $1700. One is sort of frameless, the other really is, one is .25" glass, the other .375", and so on.

Alan,
-Thanks. I measured at its 54" wide. I don't think its a standard size, so though I'd love to go the non-custom route, I don't think its possible.

Primer,
Thank you. I will e-mail you. The guy my contractor works with wuaoted $2,600 which seemed shockingkly high to me (having no background in this), but seems to be somewhat in line with what you are saying

Westsider,
Yes, please tell me where you got the custom doors you are happy with? Sounds promising.

"frameless" refers to the sliding panels. The side pieces are adjustable within a range (listed on the "specifications" tab). The one I linked won't work for you, but one of these might: http://tinyurl.com/6d9fgeb

I don't know at what point it starts to get kinda ugly if you have too much silver side panel (or other makedo modification, like tiled small wing walls), which I assume is how they achieve the adjustable width range.

I also don't know if .25 inch is too thin, but I assume it's safe from destruction for normally careful use, and safe regarding bodily harm in any event.

I was a little off. I looked up the invoice and it was 1,000 for a standard tub size. Alliance Building Systems,Alex Mermelshtayn 917 407-8885 or Jason at 202 669-3595. This was two years ago so price might be a little higher but I doubt it would be more than 1,400 based on his other prices. For the blue glass it was 200.00 more if you want.

Are you looking for just a door or an enclosure? I had my enclosure made by ABC shower doors (abcshowerdoor.com) - great experience, not cheap. They came and noticed that the shower threshold was not angled correctly, so I had that fixed before glass enclosure installation.

Fast forward 4 years - hinges are loose (my bad - poor placement of door moulding right up against the shower door opening). They fixed promptly.

I went to Manhattan Shade & Glass.. great experience and quality though you do pay for it. they're literally across the street from me so it was an easy choice. no doubt they'll take care of any problem in the future.

Hi. Just wanted to thank everyone for their responses. We would up going with ABC. They were very responsive and Miguel came in the evening to measure just a few days after calling them, Other companies took days to even call me back and couldn't do evenings or weekends. They were ready to install in about 1 1/2 weeks, the installers were very professional and it looks/works great so far. 3/8" for door and panel with starphire glass and nice hardware for $1,750. Didn't get as many estimates as I would have liked, but certainly far cheaper than the $2,600 m y contractor was quoting.
