Discussion about
Colonel Muammer Gaddafi moved closer to crushing the rebellion against his 42-year rule in Libya on Wednesday, as his troops advanced towards the rebel stronghold of Benghazi and one of his sons warned the uprising would be “over within 48 hours”. Among rebel leaders and opposition supporters, there was mounting despair and anger over the lack of support from western governments, and in particular their failure to implement a no-fly zone over Libya. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/f5d8d044-4ff4-11e0-9ad1-00144feab49a.html#axzz1GnyLmAgU
This is very disappointing. We pull the rug under from regimes friendly the U.S. and fail to support the Libyans through a no-fly-zone, and fail to supply them with a single weapon while they die fighting Gaddafi.
agree with you that the lack of action from western nations is, really, kind of heartbreaking. the revolt in iran, too. we are spoiled cynics here, but there are people in the world that really look to the us as the leader of the free world and really do think we'll come to their aid, as they fight and die to free themselves.
No fly zones don't work genius. We had one in Iraq. The Libyan pilots have incredibly bad aim and usually end up boming empty fields anyway.
The way we do things, it'd be Iraq all over again. Another odd trillion or so down the crapper.
Or Serbia or Rwanda or...
in august 08 when georgia and russia had that mini war, i remember thinking that you could see the state of mind of their president deteriorate live on tv as it progressed. he was a big USA! USA! guy, educated here i believe, and while they definitely provoked russia, he must have had some assurances from his contacts here that it would not be allowed to get that far. and as the thing got worse for them, i thought, it's really setting in for them, we're not coming, they're waiting for us, but we're not coming. and then the poor guy ate his tie. i guess that's the problem with advertising yourself and as shining city on the hill, some people believe it.

Funny to notice how we call a Muslim who fight someone we don't like a Rebel, and when he fights someone we like we call him a Terrorist.
yes, the ability to distinguish between interests and act in support of one's own, are, indeed, one of those funny things that makes us human.
LucilleAssertsFalseClaimThatSheIsHuman
if you express your desparate need for human interaction, but i'm not here to react to it, do you still exist?
Columbiacounty, did you start to buy stocks about a month ago after being berated by inonada and somewherelse and then sell in a panic in the past couple days?
Riversider:
Libya's fight is a tribal civil war, not a fight between ideological systems. The rebels
have routinely shot their prisoners, particularly those that are African and not Arab. Odd
way to solicit Obama's sympathy when you think about it.
One of their leaders also recently threatened to bomb out Libya's oil facilities is we dont
help him. That to me makes him a terrosist.
If America intervenes anywhere in Africa militarily, it should be in Somalia, to eliminate
the pirates who routinely shoot at, kidnap and murder American citizens, and to destroy the
Al Queda affiliate that is fighting the UN force in Somalia's capital city.
before we start another war, we should raise taxes to pay for it.
We cannot start any more wars before we give out no bid contracts to Halliburton and Blackwater. Everyone can rest assured that as we speak, Obama is making sure that someobody is able to profit off the violence in Libya. Only until that happens will the U.S. get invovled.
We can pay for it by pulling out of Obama's war in Afghanistan and cutting off aid to Pakistan which gets funneled back(in part) to parts of the Taliban we are fighting.
or we can pay for it by closing tax loopholes and raising taxes on high income earners.
but realistically we're not going to do either one.
so...raise taxes or shut up about libya.
or we can pay for it by closing tax loopholes and raising taxes on high income earners.
closing loop holes and lowering gross taxes will add to our GDP and make our tax system more fare. It will also reduce the incentive for legitimate businesses to move overseas and add jobs. We have too much corporate and individual welfare in this country already.
are we going to do this in the next few weeks? i don't think so.
so...raise taxes or shut up.
Seconding rb345.
By the way, is there an explanation how the rebels got so heavily armed so quickly?
many are former military and police with access to weapons.

ignore this person
report abuse many are former military and police with access to weapons.
And you know this how?
Where is Turkey?
After all that bravery they displayed and defeating the tyranical zionists with their flotilla of peace and love, where is Turkey, the premiere Islamic country capable to protect these innocent muslims from slaughter?
A world fed up with Western intervention, surely can we not have one Arab country do the deed? Respect earned is a two way street.
