Discussion about
There seem to be a lot of threads on renovation lately. A friend of mine said he thought my bathroom was dark. I've swapped out the old silver dipped light bulbs for clear bulbs and that seems to help a lot. Am I being too cheap or should I change the light fixture? While I'm thinking about changing stuff, should I hire a contractor?

PMG,

You do not need to hire a contractor to install a light, ask your super. It will cost a lot less

PMG: Primer gives good advice on SE.

Lighten up your bathroom (you don't mention how big it is):
Have a new light fixture installed (Primer is correct -- you don't need to hire a contractor. That's what I like about Primer: he's honest about those things.)

You do need a contractor for retiling (white is the way to go for lightening it up) and flooring. (Those are not do-it-yourself projects; you could try, but most likely you will need a contractor do-over.)

Get some nice white towels and bathroom rug.

Do the lighten-up.

And, by all means -- ignore CC. who was on here within a minute of my comment.
Whatever he has to say is of no importance in this discussion.
I've been out of town, and not on SE for weeks, yet the minute I post a comment on here, CC. is trolling.

Hi huntersburg.
That cc. slave can't stop trolling me.
He's on orders from Headquarters.

I'm not sure about the slavery issue, but I do find it funny that columbiacounty is so upset about a bathroom lightbulb. Some time ago he completely flipped out because a broker showed him an apartment with a window in the shower.

huntersburg : Either cc. is a slave, or even worse -- he's doing his trolling without orders because he's so well-trained.

I don't know what "a bathroom lightbulb" refers to ,because I don't read his comments.

He flipped out because a broker showed him an apartment with a window in the shower?!
So, don't buy the apartment.
He must have given his master an "update" and received instructions to post a comment about it on SE.

aboutready, shouldn't you be extorting some developer to advertise on your Brick Underground?

or criticizing another real estate blog like Apple Peeled so that yours looks better?

primer- AR is (was?)a monthly "columnist" for brickunderground. The "work" must be too hard as she hasn't written a column since November. Or she ran out of ideas.

wbottom,

Do you want to spend the day with me? You ca come to my projects and see what I do everyday.
We can go to the Sheffield, Manhattan House, Stark building as well as the four other projects we are on. What do you do for a living? If anything. As far as Brick Underground I am one of the experts on the sight. People write in with questions and those questions are answered by whatever expert is needed.

When I post on this sight you seem to comment that I am a troll, please tell me how this offends you?

Well I didn't expect this OP to get many posts. I thought of a hiring a contractor, but not because the bathroom is dark--I changed the light bulbs, remember? The bathroom was designed at the end of the 80s and shows it's age.

The elements: 1. marble tile (80s) floor, shower surround and counter banjo in tan color (not decade specific) with veins of rose (very 80s); 2. brass fixtures (80s and earlier); 3. nine bulb light bar (ugh but very practical), big expanse of mirror (80s). I have thought about making some changes without doing a gut renovation: starting with polishing the shower surround & swapping out the brass fixtures for brushed nickel. If the marble surround ends up looking better than I expect, I may consider getting a updated light fixture, reducing the size of the mirror, adding a Robern medicine cabinet and swapping out the toilet, the vanity and banjo countertop for a powder room sized vanity from Restoration Hardware with a carara marble top. The marble banjo, existing mirror and light fixture are a bit dated but they do make the bathroom seem customized since they exactly fill the space. There isn't a new light fixture on the market that is 55 inches wide.

Bottom,

Because I do this on my jobsites sometimes my IPad has a mind of it's own and changes the spelling.

Is that your way of answering the question of what you do? English teacher?

You didn't answer if you wanted to spend a day with me and visit my jobsites

Lucilebluth, I thought the tan/rose marble was beyond rehabilitation too--that it was too weathered from 21 years of wear, water damage etc. But it polished up beautifully. I'll swap out the worn fixtures. Then it'll be a revitalized, well designed 80s bathroom at a fraction of the cost and inconvenience of a gut renovation.
