Discussion about
For infinite threads on renos, materials, appliances, etc etc, you might also want to check out http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/
Not to mention brownstoner.com
Filter away...Street easy has a reno category.
Brownstoner is garbage! Just a bunch a owners shilling Brownstones from their hood.
thanks spinnaker! damn, there go the next 2 days of internet.
"Traditionally" there were actually a lot more threads on renovations/design on Streeteasy. This was in the days before Riversider and the profusion of global/national economics and political threads. If I had to choose between the utility of renovation threads or economics and politics on a RE site, I'd go with the former. But that's just me.
There have been way less threads about real estate and many more on interior design and renovations. They are related, and SE is an appropriate place for them, but what I think the OP was noting is how the % of actual Real Estate thread has gone down.
Sure, there are categories but most topic starters do not use them, and most readers do not go beyond the main page...
I like the renovation/design threads....
....ok I see Kylewest beat me to it.
Yes politcs out,and threads for making real estate you have or intend to have or sell more beautiful or functional with guidelines from other members through their experiences...
+1
kylewest you're back! did you go on a trip?
but politics and the economy are very important to real estate.
Really?, the teacher's union in wisconsin affects nyc real estate?
Of course it does lucille but the topics dominating are left/right rubbish I can split my time watching CNN/Fox for, not here and do not have much to do with NY RE.
In fact, I'm tempted to start a thread on vacuum cleaners, in particular, experiences if any with the Dyson and if they're are as functional as claimed and worth the money.
(Im only half kidding, I am actually interested if anyone has one to report on)
I just can't quit this. I was away in a remote corner of the world utterly cut off from anything requiring electricity, and I returned with no desire whatsoever to ever log onto Streeteasy again. That lasted exactly 90 minutes.
I used gardenweb a lot when I was renovating my apartment, but I found streeteasy the best source for NYC specific stuff - what stores to visit, thoughts on board approval for renovations, etc. I thought brownstoner was only marginally useful.
the "teacher's union in wisconsin" affects unions across the country, including unions in new york a union stronghold where unions affect almost every aspect of life. does that seriously need to be spelled out?
oh dear.
Please do not, because I can't read punditsh, it gives me a headache.
and ultimately, the left/right rubbish IS important in new york, in almost every possible way. it affects tax fluctuation, it affects education, police, EVERYTHING. inlcuding the exodus of the productive tax base that has been seen before and led to catastrophic results and is most definately starting to happen again, whether people want to admit this or not.
sorry for giving you a headache. better stick to talk of vacuum cleaners.
I understand where OP is coming from. At the same time, NYC RE is really a beast of its own. If I have a single family house, honestly, I will go Gardenweb.com. The problem is, New Yorkers definitely have their own refined taste in renovating an apartment, what looks good in a suburb house doesn't mean it's the same for New Yorkers (pre-war SF vs. post-war SF? People outside NYC think like this, really?). Another problem is the coop approval problem. In a SF house, I can do whatever I want. Here, I have to adhere to many kinds of coop rules and I just want to make sure I am aware of it. Hence, I utilized SE on renovations more than Gardenweb.com.
SE has its section for NJ too. See how the discussion board is over there? Super Quiet. Does it mean they don't have any renovation questions? If I get a condo in NJ, I don't think I'll come to SE for any help too.
ohwaaah.. tagooooo.. siiiaaaaaammmmm
Lets face it, SE was a raving lunatic not too long ago. I think SE went to great lengths to reel it back in and I for one appreciate it.
i don't understand what makes you a goose. you expressed the very strong opinion that if you don't find something interesting, it has no place on streeteasy. you gave the example which you even admited IS actually relevant, then said i speak pundit and am giving you a headhache. sorry. never my intention to cause any suffering to another person.
