In that price range, I hope you're looking for a studio!

We have a great studio with a lofted sleeping area for $1900, but nothing under that price in the Heights proper. There are some agents who have pocket listings (in most cases just units they know will be coming on the market but aren't ready to show). Brian Lehner of BHS has wonderful listings, though many are more expensive. I would call him directly.

If you want to venture outside of BH, there are lots of options in that price range. Most are a little dumpy, but if you are prepared, you can be ready to snatch up something great.

Make sure you have all your paperwork with you when you go to see a place: three most recent pay stubs, three most recent bank statements, letter of employment, landlord's reference, copy of your 1040. Seems excessive, I know, but the right place will go to the first person to get his/her paperwork in. Good credit is a must, and your annual income must be 40x the monthly rent. If you are lacking in any of those areas, have an in-state guarantor lined up.

This apparently got posted in sales for some reason. Sorry about that. Could someone move it to rentals?

I'm currently living in a studio/small 1 bed which I'm paying about 1600 for in the area, moved there last year. Have rents really risen that much in the span of a year?

I'll need to get a reference from my current landlord; thanks for reminding me :) I don't really qualify for anything more than 1800, unfortunately.

One other thing: I'm unconcerned with a fitness center/doorman/swimming pool/any of that kind of thing. About the only amenity that actually makes a difference to me is having laundry in/very close to the building.

Even a no-frills studio in Brooklyn Heights will be just a few bucks south of $2000/month.

Perhaps you need to expand your search to more affordable locales ...

By the way, why are you moving out of your current rental?

A few reasons...To give you an idea: right now I'm listening to water drip from a vent in my bathroom (the vent is not over the tub/shower), since no one seems to care enough to fix it. They also want to raise the rent over 30%.

I believe there's a law forbidding landlords from raising rents on non-stabilized units more than 25% each year.
