Donald Trump suing Bill Maher for $5 million over orangutan joke

Maher’s challenge for Trump to prove he’s not the son of an ape was apparently no laughing matter to the billionaire.

Apparently, a joke can potentially cost you millions if it's aimed at Donald Trump. Or at least he’d like to think so.

The outspoken businessman has called out comedian Bill Maher with a $5 million lawsuit after the comedy show host refused to uphold his part of what Trump considered a weighty bargain.

Trump and Maher reportedly put in writing that if Trump could prove he's not actually the son of an orangutan - yes, the animal - which Maher joked that he is, then the comedian would have to write a large check to a charity of Trump's choice.

Well, the "Celebrity Apprentice" head is not one to back down from a challenge. Trump presented an authentic birth certificate to show that he is, indeed, the son of real estate developer - and human- Fred Trump.

"Today I sue Bill Maher," Trump said Monday on Fox News.

Trump filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles on Monday.

It all started after Trump challenged President Obama to reveal his college paperwork with a wager of $5 million going to the charity of the president's choice. Trump has long been a skeptic of Obama’s citizenship and legal right to the presidency.

Maher, who is known for his progressive stance and support of Obama, lambasted Trump for his controversial comments. He presented the orangutan joke as a response, telling Jay Leno that Trump must be "the spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan," and offering to match the wager if the big man could prove otherwise.

The court documents were filed in L.A. County Superior Court, citing breach of contract.

"He said it with venom. I don't think it was a joke," Trump said.

Monday on his Twitter page, Maher simply wrote:

"What?? Really? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha"
