Just to keep the collate, here's the rest of the story to date:

The 2009 buyer, unable to sell after two price cuts, finally takes his $400K+ loss and sells to his broker. Broker, now the owner, immediately puts it back on the market at the price no one would pay in 2009.

I don't know whether that's fishy, but would "unseemly" apply? If the broker wanted to invest in the building, there were options other than her own client's fire-escape-view place. Maybe there's an agreement along the lines of "I'll take this off your hands, and if I can unload it for $x I'll give you $y."

So the apartment is #8C, but it is being listed as the nonexistent #8D. It seems fishy to me. What is the seller trying to hide?

He just explained it to you. In the simplest possible terms.

The listing broker is trying to throw you off the scent.
Might not work with the blood hounds of SE but the rest of the re universe will be non the wiser.
On a seperate note...This is a building that was built with little to no fanfair and sold somewhat effortlessly compaired to many other building in the hood. I know several buyers and all are very happy with their purchase.
Large apartments that commanded prices usually seen a little more to the west of lexington.
When it comes to archetectual design and neighborhood continuity...does it get any uglier than the UES?
