Discussion about
Anybody have any idea what it should cost to paint a 950 sq foot one bedroom apartment in Manhattan? I got a quote of $2300 (including paint) which seem crazy high. I was thinking it should be less than half that.

I actually think its a liitle low. Is there any prep that has to be done or is it just painting, is it just one color? how many rooms? What are your expectations?

No prep needed. Walls were just painted white by the seller and are in perfect condition. 3 rooms.

When I said "sounds about right", let me clarify (to agree with primer and others): this is on the low end and a relative "deal" for what I think you describe but not so low as to make me gravely concerned that the bidder is going to be unprofessional. No way should it be less than half that.

this is not the way to go about this. way too many variables. just the cost of paint can vary widely. one coat or two? trim in a semi-gloss? ceiling height? apartment empty or does furniture need to be moved? number of windows and relative complexity?

p.s. very unlikely that there is zero prep involved.

Yup, take advice to columbiacounty. A few years ago he visited an apartment that had a window in the shower and he went apoplectic.

i don't get it. why wouldn't you want a window in the shower to vent steam, let in fresh air and light? So long as no one is looking in, of course. I have one and LOVE it. Frosted glass, looks out at nothing, and is sufficiently high that if opened 6" you wouldn't see anything anyway except a section of belly. Could open window from top also if you're super uptight.

If you think it's crazy high, buy protective coveralls, plastic sheeting, painters tape, rollers, brushes, and the paint and away you go! You'll be amazed at how much $ you saved!

I have to agree with the comments $2,300.00 is a fair estimate.

Most people would agree with you kylewest. But columbiacounty really did go apoplectic, he said so himself in a thread about 98 Riverside Drive.

I paid that much for a smaller space about 10 years ago.

Best of all is a window *and* mechanical ventilation. That I've never seen, though.

With just a window, it's shut most of the year, or you freeze while getting rid of the steam.

In a vented bathroom, assuming the roof fans are in order, there's never any steam and you get to sneak a smoke without going outdoors.
