I'm amazed by the lenghts people will go to, to have a stackable washer and dryer installed in their apartments. I'm amazed by the lenghts people will go to, to have a stackable washer and dryer installed in their apartments. They'll give up valuable closet space, deal with the moisture most of these units produce, spend at least a couple of thousand dollars to purchase and have it installed, will sneak it in if the building doesn't allow one. When you consider the initial cost, the ongoing cost of electricity, detergent, softeners, etc. How long does it take for a break even as compared to a wash and fold service which costs about $1 a pound. Not to mention the timed saved in having to load and re-load those small stackable units. I'm specifically talking about doorman buildings where the laundry is picked up and dropped off in the lobby all folded and ready to put in a draw. On rare occasions (2 or 3 times a year) we do a load down in the basement laundry room if we have an item we want to handle ourselves. I'd rather have the closet space than the washer dryer unless the apartment has room enough for a full size washer dryer and ample closet space. Rare indeed. [less]
From a broker's point of view, of which I am, I can tell you that a washer and dryer do add value to an apt. I understand the arguement about more closet space but having been in the business for 25+ years it seems that having your own washer& dryer is a greater priority for most.
This is a pretty simple equation. Babies = Washer and Dryer.
I lived 15 years in NYC with drop off service and loved every second of it. The minute we had our first child and we were dealing with multiple sheet/clothing/blanket/etc. clean ups in one day, it was clear that we couldn't drag things to the corner. We bought a place that had a W&D and haven't looked back since.
If you have anything larger than a 1 BR, which generally means "future family apartment" I feel W&D is a must. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't begged for "same day service" at 3PM on a Saturday when you are out of onesies!
Welcome to Manhattan, where spending $1 million on an apt. does NOT entitle you to a washer and dryer!
We should have a government program to give out washers and dryers to people in NYC who don't have them.
Jesus, I keep reading about how they feel the need to have a washer and dryer because they have a kid. Doesn't anyone else's nanny do the families laundry?
I am a renter with no kids and have only looked at places with W/D. MOST new rental developments I saw had them - even in studios. (that I saw, not every one that exists.) Clearly its not something just for couples with kids. 22 year old i-bankers prefer them over not, apparently.

Thats what you are?
