Discussion about
Can anyone tell me if there is a neighborhood in Brooklyn that has both a reputable elementary AND middle school? It seems like in many neighborhoods, the zoned elementary school is quite good. However, the middle school with the same zoning...not so good. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I believe Mark Twain is the crown jewel middle school in Bk. Not zoned, but still has racial quotas.

mark twain is great, its a school for gifted and talented.......just dont cross the street or let your child go outside under any circumstances.......might get hit with a stray bullet from the projects across the way.......

bay academy has been beating mark twain in past 2 yrs. and the kids can just grab their trunks and head over to manhattan or brighton beach on nice days. i played tennis next door to mark twain for almost 30 yrs and the neighborhood has improved significantly. i still would not send my kids there.

in that neck of the woods you have a few good choices. Cunningham (sp?) is very good and PS 206 (PK-8) is also highly regarded.

if you want to live in park slope, brooklyn heights, carroll gardens, etc. private school is the only real option. junior highs have to cover a larger territory and you always end up with a significant amount of projects or good neighborhoods with dumb kids (Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, Red Hook) in any of those zones.
