Coop's for a Foreigner

Hi I'm a married Brit moving with the wife & kid to NYC this summer on a work-visa. We hope to stay for 5ys or so. I've been looking at buying and am interested to hear whether Co-op's are worth looking at, as anecdotally i hear that co-op boards look negatively at overseas types. I've moved frequently in the past 10yrs. Any thoughts? Generally have been looking at UES/Midtown South/Gramercy areas, if that's relevant. Thanks
