Discussion about
Any takers? Reasons? I say the odds are 99% that the government will default. The objective of the Republicans in the House is precisely to prevent the government from being able to borrow, because their endgame is to prevent the government from operating. It is the natural outcome of the "Kill the Beast" mentality. What better way - and what better opportunity - than now?

FG, that won't work, though you are correct that the far-right Republican party is trying to destroy the economy and do ANYTHING to get rid of Obama. There is black-and-white thinking (no pun intended) on the Right, which is why right-wing talk radio works, and left-wing doesn't: the middle & the left don't think in absolute terms; only fundamentalists do. Or as Paul Krugman said recently, the debate has become "primitive."

Indeed. As a psychological term, he is correct.

Once upon a time we had a system of government like the Republicans now want: the Confederation. It failed. So why do it again?

Because of the gold standard.

what happens if we default...i'm sure the military will be paid, government workers will be told to take an unpaid vacation...but what really happens if we default short term.

No one knows - it never happened before. But I think you're looking at the inevitable culmination of an ideological war that started under LBJ with the Voting Rights Act, and the shift of the southern white Democrats to southern white Republicans.

FDR's coalition fell apart; the country reverted to the pre-Civil War status quo. Unfortunately for the north, the south is vastly overrepresented in the federal government. We are essentially two different countries - and now the two different ideologies are duking it out. You have the southern plantation mentality versus the northern industrialist mentality; the northern mainline Protestant and Catholic churches versus the southern non-mainline Protestant churches.

This is an ideological war that has existed since the beginning of this country, which is why there is no room for compromise: that is, no compromise on the part of those who see things as all good or all bad, all win or all lose, all black or all white (literally).

The only way to break the hold of an ideology or a religion is through some violent act. Default is a violent act, in a passive-aggressive sort of way. The Tea Party will not stop until they get their way, or they die trying. They see no reason to compromise, because in their minds they are absolutely right. When you are absolutely right - or hold Absolute Truth, in the case of a religion - there can be no compromise.

To the Tea Party, the enemy must surrender, unconditionally. They will accept nothing else. Unless some violent act shows them that they can't get their own way 100%, and that they have to accept compromise.

Boehner doesn't offer a compromise because it won't pass the House. They want their way, period. They will pass their own bill and then try to blame the other side for not accepting it. They have shown this time and again, since Obama became president. He, the fool, thinks he can actually get them to compromise.

He can't. No one can. Because they don't want to.

70% of the budget is SS, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Military. Its not hard to assume all four would be impacted.

Privatize Medicare or we will force you into default.

Sincerely,

This budget mess is Washington is our fault for electing bad leaders on both sides. What makes people think that the guys who wear tigger outfits or spend half their day sexting are really going to solve the issues( I'm talking REpublicans & Democrats). Hope this picture puts it all in perspective..
