Getting Rid of Mortgage Interest Deduction

I have this buddy that thinks the feds are heading towards getting rid of the mortage interest deduction. I say hes crazy, the republicans wont let it happen and there is little interest for Democrats, (expecially in 2012) and going forward will upset to much of the public. What are thoughts? Please help me settle,

Well, there's almost no way they just get rid of it in one fell swoop. I have to think it'll be a gradual phaseout, if anything. Which might incite some sideline sitters to make their move now. Which is a questionable decision, but to be expected I think.
