Discussion about
I am moving to 63rd between 2nd and 3rd. The F is a 4 minute walk from my apartment, the N/R is a 6 minute walk, so no winner in terms of distance. My office is on Houston and Varick (right near the Houston 1 train subway). My options are: 1. Walk to the F train, take it to West 4th st, walk 10 min. to my office 2. Walk to the F train, take it to 23rd St., walk an avenue to the 23rd St. 1 train, get off at the Houston 1 stop. 3. Walk to the N/R train, talk to to 42nd St, walk 4 minutes to the Times Square 1 train, take that to Houston St. 4. Other suggestion While the F is more direct, I hate how deep underground it is. I'd deal with it if the service on the F is good, but I never take it so I don't know how well it runs.
My office is on the F so I understand having a love/hate with it -- I would probably go for #3 on the way downtown and a reverse of #2 on the way uptown (because I bet the F will be less crowded for your evening commute than for your morning one.
The one other suggestion I can throw in is that if you want to transfer from the F to the 1 at 14th Street, there are a lot of stairs involved, but at least you can make the switch completely underground.

I'm always in favor of the fewest number of trains per trip, even if it means a bit of a longer walk.
Most of the time, any time saved (plus even more time) is eaten up in wait for the second train you're transferring to.
front_porch- I would definitely do 14th over 23rd in bad weather, but the underground passes (especially in the summer) get so hot, crowded and claustrophobic, I like to avoid them when I can.
NYCMatt- I tend to agree with you, but the F freaked me out with how far down it is. It's like, if you make the trek down and find out our it's delayed, you can't just hop on up and out. The 63rd and Lex F was multiple huge escalator flights down, yikes.
Does the F generally have a good track record?
The only way to travel around NYC is by jet pack. I would not travel by any other method.
Socialist - Was that you on the hover board in greenpoint on Saturday?
peasant. i have scotty beam me around. it's wonderful.
Any serious comments?
I love the F train; I like my station, I like that it's a newer train, I like everything about it.
Did you plot it out on Google Maps? It does public transit directions.
Worst train by far is the G. Ugh! It's like 1963 in there.
Just throwing that in, I have train preferences, what can I say?
It does not take 4 minutes to transfer to the 1!!! It takes TWO!
And it does not take 10 minutes to walk from West 3rd to Houston and Varick (for most people). Get on the front of the train.
On a nice day, take the 4/5, 6 to Bleecker and walk.
Agree with huntersburg. On bad days, especially in winter, you could take the shuttle at Times Square or the L at Union Square to the 1 train.
Won't catching the downtown 6 on the UES make a nice day not so nice?
I agree, the F is way too far underground. To me, well worth the extra walk to the NR (where you can take either of the 2 trains).
hopstop
why not n/r directly to times square and change for 1? No shuttle required. And you can get the N/R at 60th and 3rd Avenue so the walk should be shorter than six minutes.
