Atelier on West 42nd Street

Hell's Kitchen (or, if you absolutely must, "Midtown West") was pretty gritty in the 80's and early 90's -- but now I don't really think it is. I never felt unsafe there, except in one or two highly-localized spots.

The main comments I'd have about the Atelier are price and location. The prices are still pretty high, in my view, compared to similar buildings -- it tries to be some sort of ultra-luxury place, but most New Yorkers aren't really interested in paying that much for that little space. And then there's the location -- two long blocks from the nearest grocery, two long blocks from all the restaurants, and four very long blocks to the subway. Before you buy or rent there, go take a walk to it a couple of times -- it gets very old very fast. (There is a crosstown bus, of course. Or, I should say, in theory there's a crosstown bus. In my experience, in even moderately busy traffic you'll see that bus pull up to the Port Authority and just...sit there as half of New Jersey slowly trudges aboard. You could cross town faster doing the worm.) It may be right for others, but I've never been a fan.
