Discussion about
Can somebody recommend a liquor store, preferably in lower manhattan, that has a good selection of french wines at reasonable prices. Bonus points if some or all of the staff know the wines well and can offer recommendations intelligently.

Downtown1234, go to Chambers Street Wines. Even a schmo like me from Huntersburg knows about their selection and service. The store is actually overstaffed with people who know what they are talking about. Italian, Spanish varieties too.

Alternatively, if you find yourself trapped in Columbia County, the Hudson-Chatham Winery is Columbia County's first winery.

Chamber Street Wine is fantastic. Excellent service and lots of interesting wines especially if you lean toward Burgundy & Piedmont. Astor is more mainstream and fairly good too.

As a complement to the stores above, Warehouse Wines & Spirits on Broadway north of Waverly is a good resource. It's a dump, but the selection is surprisingly good and you'll find some excellent deals there.

Speaking of nostalgia, for that matter But Rite Liquors when it was at Amsterdam and 70th. We knew what we had when it was there.

Chamber Street Wine is by far the best shop downtown. You will find reasonably priced European wines that are hard to find anywhere else.

Astor Wines in NoHo is another good option.

In midtown, I am a huge fan of Crush Wine Co. on 57th and Lex. Great service and selection.

Case in point Chamber Street is currently carrying a Beaune Greves that's higher rated but from lesser known producers carried by other stores. Better quality & lower price. Also Burghound came out with very high write up on 2009 Alox Corton. Chamber Street seems to be alone in stocking up on high quality attractively priced wines from this area.

Chambers Street is great and big on the organic/biodynamic wines, especially European. If you are nearer to the West Village, you can try Le Du's in Morton Square. I also recommend Frankly Wines, which is tiny but has a pretty interesting selection and very helpful staff.

Downtown Cellars, 55 Liberty St. Used to be called the Greene Grape. You can get 10% off up to 11 bottles with a Foursquare check-in. If you're into that sort of thing.

For French wines? No question: House of Burgundy, 143 West 26th Street (6th & 7th Avenues). Don't confuse this place with similar sounding House of Burgundy. Website: houseofburgundy.com

I almost hate to give out this website because we don't need more competition in purchasing these incredible wines. the site is WTSO, ie. wines til sold out. amazing values and most times if you buy only 4 bottles, the shipping is free. If it is a more expensive bottle, you may only need to buy one or two to get the free shipping. The ratings are listed with each offering but trust me, they go quickly. don't think twice!

My fave is Moore Brothers, East 20th Street between B'way & PAS. Excellent selection from France & Italy, and wines are shipped and stored at low temps. You'll need a jacket when you go in the store. You'll also find stuff that you won't find anywhere else; they specialize in small production.

Not sure if their location is downtown enough for you, but I highly recommend them.
