Note how they calculate crime rates. The crime is where the people are - even if they dont live there. Fill a neighborhood full of B&T meatheads and wannabe gangstas every weekend and the crime will follow (WV, MEPA, Flatiron). And every time I go to the WV lately on a weekend night I wonder how ANYONE could live there. It's practically a zoo -- looks like the UES on St Pattys day every friday night!

West34, there's no doubt about that. Nightlife attracts thuggery. But honestly, if you're a crime victim, what does it matter where the perp actually lives? Isn't where the crime takes place far more relevant?

Look at the rape statistics! Uptown is FAR worse. In Hamilton Heights, rapes were up 84% in just 1 year, 35 for that precinct.

Duh! No! The Village has the highest crime rate because its population is tripling every week end and half of those are out of towners & tourists (easy targets) and also has a prolific night life as opposed to Washington Heights where most streets are dad after 11pm!

so, does that mean because it's mostly tourist wallets being stolen, out-of-towners being punched in the face outside a bar and visitor cars being broken into, if you live on that block is it still a great neighborhood? Seriously.

West34, true that. Everyone will have their own idea of what a "good neighborhood" means. But I do respect people like yourself who actually put a little bit of thought into that instead of just tapping into recycled stereotypes and barely informed notions of what a neighborhood is like.

bjw2104 - exactly right. People adore recycled stereotypes. That's why I posted the article. I've said about 1000s times on here when people ask me "do I feel safe with small children on 157th St." that I feel entirely safe. I also think GV (where we lived previously) is an amazing neighborhood. If we were multi millionaires, I'd have loved to have stayed. But, I have always posted that the tourists often went from annoying (pissing between cars) to sometimes downright dangerous.

I just enjoy seeing tweaking alanhart who never missing an opportunity to make it sound as though the Heights are something out of a mad max movie rather than just an affordable place to buy beautiful apartments.

Mom - a note on the rape statistics (this came up at the community meeting)...sadly, they're primarily domestic rape. Alarming because adding more cops to the streets won't help. Hopefully there will be more public education programs to get husbands/boyfriends on board with the "no means no" program most guys get by the time they're teenagers.

What about quality of life crimes?

jim, as you already know, that's such a rude comment. And so untrue. As long as we're wildly stereotyping, "faggots" tend to be in incredible shape and do not scream victim. It's us small women walking our kids that seem to draw the ire since we "ruined" the WV with our families. Aside from cost, that actually was something we really tired of. Every new group of young people would assume if not for us the next Bob Dylan, Picasso, Dylan Thomas would stroll down Bleecker St. with a whiskey bottle in hand.
