All, I am looking to do some work on a new (5 yr old) apartment in Soho. Currently we have through the wall AC+Heat units. First question if can I install a central AC placing the unit somewhere inside the apartment (either where one of the through the wall units were or somewhere else)? If so what would you expect the cost of that to be and to run the housing all around the apt? Is this something you would suggest doing vs. just keeping the through the wall units? Also, since the units work as heat (water pipes running on top) how expensive is it to convert that into baseboard heat? btw, apt is about 1600 sq ft. Second question is in regards to moving a bathroom (current config is a large master bedroom w/ a large bathroom with a window - I would like to make 2 small bedrooms w/ a bathroom in between). I would have to move the whole bathroom a few feet, so how difficult/expensive would that be to do. I guess I would try to use as much stuff from the old bathroom as it is possible (toillet bowl, tub, tiles?). Any help/clues to cost and difficulty would be much appreciated. thanks. JB [less]
No you can not put the compressor inside your apartment. It needs to vent outside. The only thing that can be inside are the ducts or the blowers (depending if you put central air in or ductless split units). If you are looking to replace some wall units, I sell them.

It is almost impossible to move the toilet. You might need to work around it.
You bought the wrong apartment. The kind of changes you're suggesting are crazy hard to do. Learn to love the apt you loved when you paid for it.
I have actually done the "move the bathroom thing" in a past house. The concrete foundation was jackhammered to move the piping, the walls were demo'ed and then rebuilt. Floor was rebuilt with concrete, carpet thrown on top. It wasn't that big of a deal, but this was a house, not a condo or coop.
Throw out the toilet, which is $150 at home depot, throw out the $500 tub.
As for the A/C, just replace the units. If they're only 5 years old, what's wrong with them?
